  • Scenic glampsite in the grounds of an old traditional farmhouse
  • A half-hour drive from Cahors and 35 minutes from kayaking on the Lot
  • Heated outdoor pool, self-service shop, farm animals to befriend
Say ‘bonjour’ to pretty vistas, pastoral vibes and a (largely) tech-free escape at the family-friendly Lot Sous Toile, a small glampsite 15 minutes’ drive from Catus in the Lot department of Midi-Pyrénées. In the grounds of an old traditional farmhouse, the site is a fab mix of modern luxury and provincial life. There’s no wifi here, so it’s a cinch to switch off and get a real feel for the rural experience – there are chickens, sheep and occasionally cows to meet, eggs to collect for breakfast, and daily rituals that guests are more than welcome to join in with. But of course no one really goes on hols to work, so there are plenty of ways to unwind too, starting with lazy floats in the heated outdoor pool before wandering into the woodland to chill in a hammock while the kids run wild on the rope swings and in the play tent. Prefer to keep a little bit active? There’s table football, ping pong, badminton and – the perennial French fave – pétanque to keep idle minds and hands busy. Evenings spent on site can be easily catered by nabbing essential supplies from the self-service shop and setting pots bubbling in the private, well-equipped kitchens, and those interested in venturing out can head to evening markets or one of the restaurants in nearby towns. Back on site, be sure to make the most of skies free of street-lighting by turning eyes to the stars...

Local attractions

Say France, think châteaux, oui? The famous (and a little bit showbiz) Château des Milandes is a 55-minute drive away and is an absolute must-visit – the pretty pile was once home to Josephine Baker and there’s a museum dedicated to the dancer at the castle, as well as a brewery, gardens and raptor shows. Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and Château Beynac are both within about 50 minutes too, for days where extra castle is very much needed. Active types can hire bikes 15 minutes away for hours or days (or weeks?) of zooming pedals along pretty wooded roadways, soaking up the scenery of the area between the Lot and Dordogne rivers. Those with a hint of the daredevil in them can opt instead for a 35-minute drive to Kalapca Loisirs and a kayaking trip on the Lot. There are plenty of pretty towns and villages hereabouts that are well worth an explore too. The medieval town of Gourdon has the narrow streets and stone buildings one looks for in their French hols, and Cahors is a must for its UNESCO bridge, ‘pop-up’ high season beach and 25 secret gardens – and its red wine, bien sûr.
