  • Peaceful and accessible site, 10 minutes' walk from Lourdes Sanctuary
  • A 10-minute drive from Lac de Lourdes; half an hour from Tarbes
  • Wifi, play area, disabled facilities and a food shop
Way back in 1858, local girl Bernadette Soubirous had a vision of the Virgin Mary that'd change this town for good. Since then, all manner of churches, shrines and grand hotels have sprung up to cater for the faithful, who flock here every year to follow in her footsteps. Whether you count yourselves among their ranks or are just looking for a peaceful place to lay your head, you're sure to find a proper pilgrims' welcome at Camping du Loup. This peaceful spot is just the right distance from the sights and sanctuaries of Lourdes, which can be comfortably reached on foot. Bernadette didn't have to hitch a ride up to Massabielle grotto, and neither will you if you settle down here – that particular far-famed spot is an easy 15-minute stroll away. Your soul soothed by so much spirituality, when you wander back to site you'll be all the more aware of Camping du Loup's green and leafy surrounds – here, amid the trees, shrubs and mountain views, you're pretty sure to find repose. Off-site relaxation is also on the cards for angling fans, who are free to cast a line in the nearby Gave de Pau river (100 metres from site). Kids who can't sit still that long may well prefer to hit the playground instead. This practical site also comes with the advantages of wifi, a food shop and good all-round disabled facilities.

Local attractions

This site is just outside central Lourdes (10 minutes' walk) and close to lots of family-friendly spots. Sporty folk can tee off at Lourdes Pyrénées Golf Club (10 minutes' drive), a well-liked local links overlooking Lac de Lourdes. Model villages more your thing? Head to the intricately-crafted Musée du Petit Lourdes (25 minutes' walk or five minutes' drive). Set your sights on the high peaks of the Pyrenees? It's a bit of a longer drive to get out to the loftiest spots, but the folk at Camping du Loup think it's well worth the extra distance. The Cirque de Gavarnie (an hour and 15 minutes), for example, has mountain vistas so fine that UNESCO deemed them worthy of special protected status. Afterwards, take the kids downhill to Gavarnie (an hour from site) for ice creams and donkey rides. Fancy a look-in at another Pyrenean town? Tarbes (30 minutes) is the place to be for military regalia – head to the Musée Massey for its top-notch Hussar artefacts. Just next door, the Jardin Massey is an 11-hectare oasis of rare flora and fauna.
