  • Quiet and green site by the Dourbie river with lots of grassy space
  • On the outskirts of Nant, a 40-minute drive to Roquefort-sur-Soulzon
  • Volleyball, pétanque, play area, wifi, trout fishing and common room
Rendezvous by the river at Camping Le Vialaret, a site that brushes a bit of the 72-kilometre-long Dourbie in the middle of the Grands Causses Natural Regional Park. This is a peaceful place at the foot of Roc Nantais mountain and the Larzac plateau in the Midi-Pyrénées – the whole grounds are lush and green, with plenty of trees scattered around for shade. Spend days supervising the kids at the playground, taking part in games of pétanque and volleyball on the courts, or fishing for trout from the grassy banks down by the river. After more of a high-octane adventure in Aveyron? This site also suits. It’s surrounded by hiking, walking and via ferrata trails, plus chances to get stuck into some canyoning, canoeing and climbing in the national park. If culture is more your bag, there are medieval villages and lively cities to check out too, like Montpellier (an hour and 15 minutes drive); ask at the reception for top tips on the destinations to plug into your satnav. Don’t fancy going too far? There’s really not much need. Stroll around the site taking in the green scenery, have a breather in the common room or out on the terrace overlooking the pretty countryside, then walk the 600 metres to the village for a look at the traditional architecture and a swim at the public pool.

Local attractions

There’s a handful of attractions to busy yourself with if you decide on days out and about. The mighty Millau Viaduct (25 minutes) is one epic place to visit – the world’s tallest bridge at 270 metres high, it stretches across the Tarn gorge. While you’re in the area, take off on walks with views over the vast valley below, then bounce between the Larzac Templar and Hospitallers’ five fortified sites. La Cavalerie (15 minutes' drive), La Couvertoirade (15 minutes), Sainte-Eulalie de Cernon (25 minutes), Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux (half an hour) and Saint-Jean-et-Saint-Paul (45 minutes) are spread across the lush landscape and have 15th-century walls to wander, remnants of Knights Templar churches to check out and Romanesque buildings to roam around. Happy to head further on? Swing by the Sylvanès abbey (an hour) for a gander at this 12th-century building set amid woodland before freshening yourself with a dip at the Lac de Pareloup (an hour and 10 minutes), a lovely lake dotted with beaches.
