It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly Midi-Pyrénées site on the shores of Mercus lake
- Direct lake access, private pier, canoe hire and fishing
- Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, pools, snack bar and terrace
Gorgeous lake alert… have a look at the site pics to see the view from Camping du Lac Mercus, a family site on the banks of a lake of the Ariège river just outside Mercus-Garrabet in the Midi-Pyrénées.
There's direct access to the lake edge here, for fishing, taking out one of the site’s canoes from the private pier, or diving into the deep. If that’s not your swimming style, a heated outdoor pool and paddling pool are on site, and sun loungers alongside.
Other facilities include a playground (with lake views), and pétanque, table football and table tennis… or you could rebel against all ideas of activity and take yourself off to the spa for pampering in the Jacuzzi, sauna or steam room.
The site has a snack bar serving pizza, ice creams and hot and cold drinks to have on the open terrace; a bread and pastries service runs here in summer too. Further eats are at the grocery store and local bistro in the village a 15-minute walk away, or at the bakeries, restaurants and supermarket in Tarascon-sur-Ariège, 10 minutes’ drive from the site.
Got a little mucky on your day out? The launderette can freshen up your travelling togs, while two toilet blocks have free hot showers, toilets and a baby bathroom to restore you to your former glory.

Local attractions
Active types have plenty of ways to get out and about: practise paddling on the lake, then take to the river for a day out among the views and wildlife. A canoe centre 15 minutes’ drive away has kit, maps and advice; canyoning and climbing tours (both on rock faces and via ferrata climbing routes) are also on offer here.
Pony rides and beginners’ lessons are at the riding centre 20 minutes away, along with treks into the foothills of the Pyrenees and alongside rivers and lakes. View the area’s scenery from above with a trial flight from the paragliding centre 10 minutes away, or experience life in the trees on the canopy adventure course at AkroBranch, 50 minutes from the site.
If you fancy a calmer day out, Château de Foix sits on a craggy outcrop and dominates the town of Foix, 20 minutes away. Just outside the town, the Forges de Pyrène is an open-air living museum where you can see olde worlde skills in action – blacksmith, clog maker and traditional baker among them.
For a glimpse even further back in time, head to the caves of Niaux or Lombrives (both 15 minutes) to see prehistoric cave paintings and explore the caverns that formed refuges for all sorts of folk for many centuries.
