  • Small site at a leisure centre overlooking Lake Haspelschiedt
  • In the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park close to the German border
  • Dog-friendly microlodges with access to restaurant and takeaway
What a cheery, friendly name for a site… and indeed Les Amis du Lac is a most cheery and friendly place for folk looking out for a lakeside stay. As the name suggests, this Moselle site sits in an enviable waterside spot – by gorgeous and peaceful Lake Haspelschiedt to be precise, about five kilometres from the German border. The associated views are rather fine from here, as you'll note from the pics – and so are the activities that go along with the location, as the site is part of the Haspelschiedt Leisure Centre, a fab forested area with hiking trails, picnic areas and play areas to roam around. Pétanque, tennis and fishing are favourite activities at this leafy lakeside site: pick up your permits on site and try your luck with the critters lurking within the waters. Or maybe you might like to turn your attentions to that other popular pastime: eating. The lakeside restaurant is the place for fish dishes, pizzas and tasty desserts; there's also a takeaway option available if you fancy settling down at your own pad. And well you may want to spend a little extra time at your digs: these cute microlodges are smart and characterful little places with hand-carved furniture and cosy nooks to cuddle up into, and a terrace outside with table and chairs for alfresco dining. Bedding and towels are thrown in to keep the packing list light, and the lodges are also stacked with smart touches including a flatscreen TV, a coffee zone and a stylish bathroom with toilet and shower.

Local attractions

Dust off your walking boots and head out on one of the lakeside trails to start with, then give them a bit more of a workout on the forested walking routes of the surrounding Northern Vosges Regional Natural Park. The Rocher de la Liese (35 minutes' drive) and the ruins of the Château du Falkenstein (25 minutes) are good places to take a wander; the views from the latter make a fine reward for the hike up the hill. Fancy a bit more local history? Take off to the ruins of Nouveau-Windstein or Schoeneck (both half an hour) or aim for the rather more imposing Vauban citadel in Bitche (10 minutes). While you're in town, check out the former military hospital, Sainte-Catherine church and lovely Garden for Peace. Keep your eyes on the pretty things with a visit to the crystal museum and glass museum in Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche (20 minutes) or the gorgeous Lalique Museum in Wingen-sur-Moder (half an hour). If that's all a bit delicate for your tastes, head off to meet the sturdier attractions at Ranch Bisons Safari (25 minutes).
