  • Family site in the stunning Limousin ‘valley of the painters’
  • Ramblers’ haven: waymarked trails and Camino within 15 minutes' drive
  • Fishing and swimming in the large Grande Cazine lake across the road
Remember to pack your walking boots for your hols at Camping de la Cazine… At the family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the village of Noth in the Creuse department of Limousin, central France, you're going to want to strap them on every day. La Cazine is a rambler’s paradise: it’s in the Limousin ‘valley of the painters’ (inspiration to artists such as Monet and Guillaumin) and there are plenty of waymarked trails in the area around the site, including the four-kilometre circular Painter’s Trail, which starts 25 minutes away in Crozant. If you’re up for a longer trek, you can join the long-distance Camino de Santiago, which passes through the scenic medieval town of La Souterraine 15 minutes from the site. Rest your weary legs back on site with a dip in the heated pool, or sign up for golf, archery, yoga and loads more. You could also stroll across the road to the Grande Cazine lake for a spot of sedate fishing or a bit of lake swimming. Feeling the hunger? Stroll over to the on-site food truck for a takeaway snack or tuck into your own supplies (stock up at one of the supermarkets in La Souterrain and be sure to nab some of the fresh-baked bread and pastries from reception), or venture off site for a meal at one of the many restaurants within 15 minutes.

Local attractions

The scenic area around Camping de la Cazine is well worth a poke around, starting with the nearby towns of La Souterraine (home to the fab Bridiers tower) and Crozant, which is a top jumping off spot for boat trips on the Creuse river and has a scenic ruined fortress to visit – call in to the Lépinat Centre to learn about the artists who were so hugely inspired by this part of Limousin. If you’re getting a taste for scenic urban France, there are a couple of villages in the area you’ll definitely want to add to the list: La Celle-Dunoise prettily hugs the banks of the Creuse river and Saint-Benoît-du-Sault (one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France) has some winding streets you’ll very much want to follow – both are around half an hour’s drive from La Cazine. Craving a more city-like urban experience? Take a day trip (or two) to Limoges, 45 minutes away, for its spectacular cathedral (which took six centuries to finish), botanic gardens and aquarium, and for Zoo Parc Reynou, a zoo in the grounds of a castle. If that’s not enough to keep the kids entertained, make your way to Guéret (25 minutes) for the giant labyrinth and Les Loups des Chabrières animal park (wolves galore).
