- Dog-friendly site in a natural park on the shore of Lac de Viam
- A 20-minute drive from Treignac and 25 minutes from Meymac
- Lake beach 30 metres away; canoes available to hire from the site
Looking for a change of scenery? A fishing retreat and a base for wild swimming? On the shore of Lac de Viam, Camping du Lac de Viam has you covered. This relaxing place in the Millevaches en Limousin Regional Natural Park is well-maintained and a splendid spot for anglers and wildlife fans. There’s direct access to the lake via a small beach 30 metres from the site, where guests are welcome to head out for a bit of wild swimming (unsupervised).
There are 175 hectares of water to get out over, so grab a rental canoe from the site and get paddling. There’s an 18-kilometre route all the way around if you’ve got enough steam in you, but you're equally welcome just to do a bit of gentle splashing around. On dry land, hiking and biking are go-to activities as is investigating the country markets that take place in the surrounding villages.
With shaded spots around the site, there are plenty of places to kick back when you’re done with the energetic stuff. You might want to use this time to plot out your route to the local attractions, which include the medieval town of Treignac (20 minutes’ drive) and the granite houses in pretty Meymac (25 minutes).
Dogs and kids are both welcome on site, so any family barbecues will have full attendance. There are showers, toilets and washing-up areas across the site, as well as a playground. In Viam village, five minutes’ walk away, there are two restaurants. The site also runs a free shuttle service from Bugeat train station.

Local attractions
Once you’ve practised your paddling at the lake by the site, take yourselves off for a longer outing down the river at Gorges de la Vézère (55 minutes’ drive). This craggy area has canoe and kayak outings to help you explore the stunning landscapes, along with fishing spots and hiking trails for those who’d rather stay on dry land.
As you’ll be staying in a natural park there are plenty of places to get out for walks nearby, with points of interest including waterfalls, the Gallo-Roman ruins of Les Cars (20 minutes’ drive) and the ghostly abandoned village of Clédat (half an hour). You could also head for the trails of Tourbière du Longeyroux (20 minutes) or climb up Mont Bessou tower (25 minutes) to see the scenery from above.
A tour of local towns and villages is a good idea too, starting with the medieval streets of Treignac (20 minutes) and moving on to the Benedictine abbey in Meymac (25 minutes) and the fortified town of Uzerche (50 minutes).
