- Well-kept riverside site in the Cévennes National Park
- On the edge of Bédouès-Cocurès; 10 minutes' by car from Florac
- Restaurant, bike rental, horse/donkey trekking, pétanque and beach
Go with the flow at Camping Chantemerle, a Bédouès-Cocurès site deep in the Cévennes National Park. Set right on the banks of the river Tarn with gorgeous mountain views, this well-kept park will be right up your alley if you're into your nature, cycling, hiking, watersports or donkey trekking – any combination of the above can be sorted here.
Of course, when going away it's not only location that counts – some will be after a wide range of amenities while others prefer more self-sustained stints. Camping Chantemerle manages to keep both camps happy – the bar, restaurant, communal areas and book exchange should prove popular with more sociable sorts, while those that prefer to keep themselves to themselves have plenty of secluded treelined corners where they can stretch out for a snooze.
The site also has direct access to a pretty river beach where freshwater fishing, open-air swimming and sun lounger lazing are on the cards. While there's plenty of scope for staying put, the site's reception is on hand for tourist information and bike rental. The particularly scenic GR70 is less than a five-minute walk from the park; it's also known as the Stevenson trail for being the route once trod by the author of 'Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes'. Fancy following in his footsteps? Talk to site staff to take out a horse, donkey or llama for a jaunt.

Local attractions
Florac (10 minutes' drive) is a key spot on the Cévennes tourist trail, with an attractive town centre and a bubbly natural spring. If you fancy making this the start of a water-themed day out, you could follow up with a visit to Runes waterfall (20 minutes), head to snap the water flowing through the spectacular Gorges du Tarn (an hour and 10 minutes) or get the site staff to book you a kayak with a trusted local watersports company.
Also recommended are the villages of Quézac (15 minutes), Le Pont-de-Montvert (20 minutes) and Sainte-Énimie (40 minutes); the last of these is home to the artsy constructions on display at Utopix sculpture park. You could also head out (either on your own or with the help of a mountain guide) to survey the lofty heights of Mont Lozère (50 minutes), the highest peak around.
The nearest large town, Alès (an hour and 10 minutes) is quite a drive, but its cathedral, public parks and local history museums (including one on the site of a former mine) are all worth poking around if you find yourself with a spare afternoon.
