Have urban heatwaves got you dreaming of (and planning) relaxing beach holidays? And would south-western France fit the bill? Let’s see: long stretches of golden sand – check. The shallow warm waters of the Mediterranean, so the whole family can have a splash around – check. Throw in excellent gastronomy (and wines), and you’ve got yourself a pretty sweet deal.
In the Hérault department of south-western France is Camping La Maire, a well-equipped site in Sérignan-Plage, a 25-minute drive from Béziers. La Maire has a large pool (the site of energising aquagym sessions and friendly water-polo matches) and a toddlers’ paddling pool with spraying mushrooms. There are also two waterslides – but don’t worry about kids constantly splashing next to you as you try to swim laps: after a full loop, both slides lead to their own miniature pools.
Young guests also get a playground shaded by Mediterranean pine trees, with a bouncy castle, an adventure course and classic equipment like swings. And if you feel that your youngsters' energy needs a little direction, you can sign them up for the kids' club (available daily in July and August).
There’s plenty for grown-ups to sink their teeth into, as well – from sporting tournaments to karaoke sessions, plus ping-pong tables and a pétanque court. Not forgetting those Mediterranean beaches: the nearest one is just over half a kilometre away (10 minutes’ walk); if you’re into naturism, you’ll have to walk a little further (25 minutes), towards the Orpellières Nature Reserve.

Local attractions
Fabrikus World (20 minutes’ drive) has a massive Ferris wheel, plus thrill rides like the Euroloop roller coaster and bungee jumping-type flights. There are treetop courses for all levels of expertise at Béziers Aventure (20 minutes), or head to Aqualand Cap D’Agde (20 minutes) for vertiginous, multi-loop waterslides.
The medieval town of Béziers (25 minutes) has a 13th-century Romanesque cathedral. The pretty Jardin de la plantade is a shaded spot on the river Orb, with good views of an old watermill. Just out of town is the Écluses de Fonseranes, a series of nine locks on the Canal de Midi.
In Sète (50 minutes), check out the Musée Paul Valery if you’re into fine arts, or head to the International Museum of Modest Arts, which displays niche objects and installations created with everyday items (like car parts). Then climb up to the Panoramique du Mont Saint-Clair for far-reaching views of the coast and the Étang de Thau lake.
