It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site five minutes' drive from the Mediterranean
- A 20-minute drive to Montpellier and 40 minutes to Nîmes
- Outdoor pool, games room, bar and on-site bike hire
Sandwiched between the sandy Mediterranean shores of Palavas-les-Flots and Montpellier's popular old town, Camping Le Camarguais is particularly well placed for exploring the varied landscapes of the Hérault department. City days, seaside times and cycle outings are all equally easy options from this family-oriented site on the banks of the Lez river just outside the town of Lattes.
With direct access to cycle-friendly paths along the river, it'll take you about 15 minutes to cycle to the centre of Lattes, where modern Port Ariane marina, handy shops and an interesting local history museum are all worth visiting. It's also possible to cycle down the beach, around four kilometres away. More adventurous bike trips to the island of Maguelone and its cathedral (25 minutes) or all the way to Sète (about an hour and a half, or a 35-minute drive) are also recommended. Haven't brought a bike? Guests at Camping Le Camarguais can hire them on site.
Wherever you get to, it’s good to know that this quiet spot has well-maintained green grounds for unwinding in afterwards, along with leisure facilities including an outdoor pool, a games room and a café-bar. A full restaurant is also available for more substantial meals, and it also hosts themed evenings every Wednesday in high season.
This is a place that’s in tune with the heritage of its local area, which is reflected in the site's traditional architecture, its Camargue-themed entertainment and, of course, the food served here.

Local attractions
The seven-kilometre beach in Palavas-les-Flots is no doubt its key attraction, but before you get settled on the sand start with a trip to the top of the Phare de la Méditerranée for a panoramic view over the sea, lakes and the mountains beyond. A stroll around town, taking in the colourful canalside houses, the neo-Romanesque church and Levant Park, is a good idea too.
For urban wanders on a grander scale, head to central Montpellier (20 minutes’ drive) to explore its elegant streets and squares and visit its museums, zoo and aquarium, or travel a little further to Nîmes (40 minutes) for a whole heap of Roman architecture. Seafront Sète (35 minutes) is another good choice for walks by the Canal du Midi and visits to its art galleries.
Something rather more rural? Set off to the salt marshes and lagoons around Le Grau-du-Roi (30 minutes), go kayaking around Le Pont du Diable (40 minutes) or head out for hikes around Canyon du Diable (50 minutes). Stop by in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert (45 minutes) to see one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France and find out why it won this status.
