A holiday next to a river beach in a gorgeous corner of Hérault? If that sounds just the job for you, head for Camping La Plage de l’Orb. This family-friendly site on the edge of the pretty village of Cessenon-sur-Orb has direct access to a broad sweep of pebbled beach along the Orb River, where the whole family can go swimming, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, or simply soak up the sun.
Set right on the river banks, the site has views over the village and its once-fortified medieval tower. You’re very unlikely to experience dull moments staying here, what with play areas for the youngest guests, all the action down by the river and frequent dance nights or themed dinners to keep families are entertained all day long.
Handy catering amenities include a bread-delivery service, a riverside ‘guinguette’ café, a food truck for takeaway meals and a communal barbecue, so that’s all taken care of. Any supplies you need, you’ll likely find them five minutes’ walk away in Cessenon-sur-Orb.
Other useful facilities to make your life easy on site include modern and accessible shower blocks, laundry facilities and gear hire (like fridges, cutlery and crockery), plus a waste-disposal service for motorhomes.

Local attractions
You can of course spend all your time swimming and messing about on boats on the Orb River, but there’s more to see around here, so maybe you’d like to tackle one of the hiking or mountain biking trails directly accessible from the site. There’s a gentle walking route around Vézoles Lake (50 minutes’ drive) and an easy scramble up to the waterfalls at Cascades de Mauroul (40 minutes) if the kids are with you.
Looking to up your activity levels in untamed Hérault countryside? The Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park (10 minutes’ drive) is a popular hub for trail running, canyoning and climbing in the spectacular Gorges d’Héric, and at the Grotte de la Devèze (40 minutes), you can take subterranean guided tours of caverns sporting fantastical displays of stalactites and stalagmites.
There are many stunning historic villages to explore too, including Olargues (half an hour), with its medieval castle, ancient stone bridge and views over a meander in the River Jaur. Roquebrun (10 minutes) is another gorgeous hamlet, with pink-hued houses tumbling down the hillside to the Orb and lush plantings in its Mediterranean Gardens.
