- Excellent location opposite the fishing port on the Hérault river
- Near the 40-kilometre bike path to Agde, Grau d’Agde and Cap d’Agde
- Pool, library, play area, TV room, shop and snack bar with terrace
What a spectacular spot for fishing. And families. (And fishing families.) And cycling and beaches… and lazy days at base… and Mediterranean towns and medieval villages… do angle a stay at Camping Les Romarins as soon as humanly poss.
Les Romarins is a laidback, friendly and family-friendly site, right opposite the fishing port – and tackle shop – on the Hérault river and an easy 20-minute stroll from Mediterranean sands at Grau d’Agde (‘your premier afternoon destination,’ say the sensible Les Romarins team). Or bike to Grau d’Agde instead: it, Agde and Cap d’Agde are all linked by the nearby cycle track covering almost 40 kilometres towards the Mediterranean coast.
The nearest town to the site is Agde, five minutes’ drive away or about 10 minutes along the cycle path. Founded by the ancient Greeks, it’s one of the oldest towns in France and is home to the Mediterranean port of the vast and UNESCO-listed Canal du Midi, running for 280 kilometres from the Atlantic to the Med.
Back at base, there’s free wifi at the bar (if the kids want to surf local history while the grownups have a cocktail) and at all pitches; other facilities include a TV room, library, play area and a pool heated throughout the season. Whatever you opt for, stroll along to the snack bar at some point – or several points – for light bites and coffee on the terrace.
A food shop, ice service, postcard sales and a bathroom for guests with reduced mobility are also on site.

Local attractions
Where to start? The beach, the Canal du Midi or the 40 kilometres of bike path, all within strolling distance? Have days at each, then turn your attentions to other Hérault department highlights both inland and around the coast.
A must-visit is Pézenas (20 minutes’ drive), a place of handsome townhouses and cobbled streets, once home to Molière and his Illustre Théâtre in the town’s protected area of over 115 historic spots. Get there at any time from May to October for the many colourful artistic parades, or in March for the famed Pézenas Mardi Gras.
The Camping Les Romarins team also recommends a trip to the medieval village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert (an hour to the north and 45 minutes from Agde), a stopover point for the St James’s Way and close to the GR 74 long-distance path. Agde and its ramparts, museums and Roman cathedral is also a must, as is Béziers (35 minutes) and the nine Canal du Midi locks of Fonserannes.
If you’re up for a longer drive, Carcassonne (an hour and 20 minutes) holds the famed Carcassonne Firework Extravaganza every July: just the spot too to track down a bowl of the city’s cassoulet.
