It's free, quick and easy!
- Well-established park with direct access to Espiguette beach
- Around a half-hour drive from Montpellier and Camargue National Park
- Waterpark, bike rental and marina for launching boats and jetskis
When you find a special spot, you want to settle down for quite some time, non? And that’s exactly what’s happened at Camping de l’Espiguette, 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Le Grau-du-Roi – this is a place that’s been happily running in this Gard seaside location for more than 50 years.
A proper highlight of this setting is its direct access to the huge Espiguette beach, via a route through the dunes that takes about five minutes by bike or 15 minutes on foot. On top of that, it’s close to the Camargue National Park and within easy reach of the swish streets of Montpellier too; both are about half an hour away by car.
With such a seaside location it’s perhaps no surprise to find that watery activities feature highly on the menu here – the site has its own marina where guests can launch boats and jetskis, and a smashing waterpark with waterslides that should fill many an hour for the kids.
Other facilities on site include a games room, tennis court, play area and bike rental. Food and drink can be sorted at the well-stocked supermarket and bakery or the bar, restaurant and ice cream counter. Plenty of other essentials are taken care of too, including a laundry room and a hairdresser (handy for folk wanting to doll themselves up before the evening’s entertainment).
Please note that both wifi and 4G can be patchy because of the site’s remote location; site staff respectfully advise that you’ll probably not want to spend too much time staring at a screen anyway, given the excellent facilities and fab surrounds…

Local attractions
Intrigued by what might lurk beneath the surface of the sea? Find out with a trip to the Seaquarium (five minutes’ drive) to meet sharks, seals and an assortment of local and exotic fish. While you’re over in Le Grau-du-Roi, plan an adrenaline-packed evening on the rides of Amigoland and take a wander around the medieval citadel of Aigues-Mortes, just outside town (10 minutes’ drive).
Anyone with even a passing interest in wildlife and scenery should take an outing to the Camargue National Park (half an hour) – it’s one of France’s top natural areas, with lots of birds to spot, boat trips through the wetlands, and hikes and horse riding to take in the stunning surrounds.
In complete contrast but still equally worthy of a day out is Montpellier (35 minutes) – depending on your personal taste you might like to schedule history-packed wanders around the cathedral and Roman sites, an arty afternoon at the Musée Fabre or some time coming eye to eye with critters at the zoo.
