  • Treehouse cabins in the grounds of a treetop adventure park
  • A 30-minute drive from Dole and an hour from Dijon
  • Sprawling Forest of Chaux within 15-minute drive for hiking, wildlife
Want to spend hols living that Tarzan (or George of the Jungle) life, sleeping in trees and wandering through jungles (actually forests)? Swing along to Espace Fouletot, a leafy site in woodlands less than 10 minutes’ drive from the Franche-Comté village of Mont-sous-Vaudrey. The site’s in the grounds of a treetop adventure park of the same name where, during high season, explores of tightrope nets between branches, a central net maze and slides should divert for a few hours, and mountain bike trails, fitness trails, and fishing in the on-site pond, should round out stays nicely. Getaways in the other 10 months of the year need be no less active either – the site’s 15 minutes from the edge of the Forest of Chaux (France’s second largest), a top spot for hiking trails and for red deer and wild boar spotting. It’s also just 35 minutes to waterfall hikes, swimming, wading and picnics at Cascade des Tufs. On lazier days, or when the evening closes in, wander no further than the shops in Mont-sous-Vaudrey, a half-hour walk, to stock up on barbecue-friendly eats (barbecues are welcome on site), then clamber back into the trees for nights spent sleeping three to five metres off the ground or soaking up leafy views of the night sky.

Local attractions

If tree top adventures on site aren’t enough, never fear: it’s a 25-minute drive from base to Acro Isis in Dole, where tree climbing courses, paintball, canoeing and kayaking are all waiting to be conquered. Need to cool off after all that activity? Head for the slides and pool (and miniature golf, pétanque and volleyball) at Aquaparc Isis right next door to the Acro. Big fans of vaccines and pasteurised milk may want to pay homage to their inventor with explores of his home and laboratory at the Maison de Louis Pasteur, 25 minutes away. Stick with the past with a trip to the UNESCO-listed Arc-et-Senans Royal Saltworks (25 minutes) – a stunning factory and residential complex first built in the 18th century – or to the 8th-century Great Saltwork of Salins-les-Bains or the vineyard and 18th-century castle of Château d’Arlay, both 35 minutes from the site. City days are a cinch hereabouts too. Start with Dole, half an hour away, where spectacular architecture, museums of fine arts and science, canals, winding streets and plenty of gardens beckon, or travel a little further to Dijon (an hour) and its palaces, museums, galleries, planetarium and, of course, as much mustard as one person can stomach. Got a bit more time to kill? The Swiss border is about an hour and a half away, and the cities of Geneva, Lausanne and Bern are within roughly two and a half hours.
