When hols among trees, close to watersports and within easy reach of a healthy dash of history are beckoning, pop that cork in celebration at finding Camping de La Croix d’Arles, a family-friendly site in the Champagne-Ardenne (five minutes’ drive from Bourg and Langres) that ticks all those boxes. Stays on this well-wooded site will see guests able to unwind in hammocks slung beneath cherry, oak and pine trees, swim, hike and birdwatch on the nearby Villegusien lake (10 minutes from base – it’s a reservoir in truth, but one of the famed four lakes of Langres), and dive into history at a handful of spots including old Gallo-Roman ruins. If exploring far beyond site sounds like too much, opt to stay put instead. Guests can spend days taking cooling dips in the outdoor pool or lounging poolside, trying hands at pétanque or miniature golf, finding peace in the sauna, or spending quiet moments on the terrace. Eats are well-catered for here too: barbecue facilities are dotted around site and supplies can be secured at the small food shop. Prefer to let someone else do the cooking? A restaurant is open from April to mid-October, and has special menus for kids and those with dietary restrictions.

Grand spot, lovely woodland, loads of space for your tent. Top grub, especially the pizza and bread. Kids love the pool. Some bits are a bit old-fashioned, but grand and clean. Hand y for the motorway, and plenty say they'll be back. A few little niggles with the loos, like no paper or seats.

Liked This campsite has potential to be lovely because of the natural surroundings. You were able to choose your pitch. You were allowed to check in and check out late.

Disliked Lack of available water points. The only one we could find was by the one and only small toilet block. The other toilet block was dilapidated and closed. This is a fairly large spread out campsite and was quite full the one night we stayed. The small toilet block, unisex, was old and smelled bad and that night the water from the shower was cold. The toilet paper is on the wall outside of the cubicles. Therefore make sure you take enough in with you when you go to use the toilet! The toilet seats are not connected they rest on the bowl so males are unable to lift them up. Seriously for the price you pay to stay here, the facilities offered at this campsite was one step up from an aire.

Liked Beautiful woodland site with pick your own pitches which there were plenty. Lovely warm welcome from the staff and the facilities although a little dated have clean warm showers plenty of toilets and sinks. There is a washing machine and dryer which was great and an elsan point and plenty of bins. There looked plenty of things to do for children including a lovely pool. We had a fab stopover here and would love to stay again.

Liked Excellent campsite for our return journey to Calais. Friendly and welcoming, great facilities and very easy access with our twin axle caravan. Children loved the site too. Great pizza and the most friendly staff serving us ! lovely fresh bread and pain au chocolat for our onward journey. I would highly recommend this site and book again

Liked Stayed for one night, pitch was a decent size with electric. Nice easy check in. Swimming pool, little park, trampoline, pizza kitchen, fresh bread for breakfast to order. Perfect stop over for half a day and night

Disliked No limit to persons on the trampoline (got very crowded)! Pool was beyond freezing! Still went in and made it good fun!

Liked Nice pitches that weren't too close together and bordered by hedges (the ones at the back). Nice walks direct from campsite. Friendly staff. Nice pool. Quiet and comfortable.

Disliked The restaurant food wasn't great. Said I wouldn't recommend or return purely as there are better campsites.

Local attractions

Stays hereabouts would be incomplete without a taste of history, so get started with a trip into Langres, five minutes’ drive away. The small town is home to an impressive fortified wall (parts of which are more than 2,000 years old) with seven towers and seven gateways. Begin visits to the town by walking or biking the ramparts, then turn attention to the cathedral and the stunning Navarre Tower. For non-drivers, Langres can be reached via a greenway joinable 700 metres from the site. Hikes and bike rides along this route will also bring explorers as far as La Liez, the largest of the four lakes (otherwise a 20-minute drive), where waterskiing, wakeboarding and sailing are to be tried, and where pike and carp can be caught. A sandy beach also beckons for lazy days of swimming and sunbathing. The other two lakes – La Mouche and Charmes – are within 25 minutes, and it’s just five minutes from base to the source of the mighty Marne river. This is France, bien sûr, so it should come as no surprise that a wealth of chateaux are within reach. The nearest is Château du Pailly, 15 minutes away, which is considered one of the best examples of renaissance architecture in Champagne-Ardenne. Castles aren’t the only historical draw round here either: the abandoned (yet scenic) forts of Cognelot and Peigney are both within 15 minutes, and the pristinely pretty 12th-century Abbaye Auberive is 25 minutes away.
