  • Glamping in the Loire Valley, a couple of hours from Paris
  • Small, eco-friendly and laidback site among trees and countryside
  • Explore the area by donkey, available for ages two and up
It's fairly safe to say you won't have an experience like this anywhere else in France. Location, setting, Paris and Loire Valley châteaux are all among the excellent aspects of the spectacular site of L'Heureux Hasard – and that's even before heehawing about the donkeys... Opened in 2017 so thoroughly modern throughout, L'Heureux Hasard is a serene and laidback site in handsome Loir-et-Cher countryside, under 15 minutes' drive from the world-famed Château de Cheverny in the world-famed UNESCO site of the Loire Valley, 25 minutes from Chambord and ZooParc de Beauval, and a couple of hours from Paris. There's a range of accommodation on offer throughout the site, all placed prettily among greenery and trees and all well kitted out for guests. But... the donkeys. L'Heureux Hasard has its own drove, available to take you and your offspring out into these scenic surrounds in style on nature treks of a couple of hours – avec, of course, picnic. For more substantial donkey sightseeing, take it most seriously indeed and book a trip of two to seven days, or a themed one among the wildflowers and culinary plants of Solange, to see deer in autumn, or to hook up with local and traditional storytellers. L'Heureux Hasard is an eco-friendly site using solar lighting and water recovery, and with colourful and well-equipped amenities including toilets and showers, disabled facilities and a communal kitchen. Communal barbecues and a firepit area are also to hand. The closest town is Contres, under 10 minutes away by car or reachable by pedal: hire a bike from the L'Heureux Hasard team on days you're not out and about by hoof.

Local attractions

You could cruise around this part of French countryside for weeks, whether you're up for heritage hols, active days, family times or river shenanigans. Two of the most famed French châteaux in the land are within 25 minutes' drive of L'Heureux Hasard: Château de Cheverny, with gardens, maze and, er, exhibition on Tintin, and Château de Chambord, the biggest in the Loire Valley and once the hunting haunt of regal Francis 1. There's also Château de Chenonceau (40 minutes), again mightily famed in the Loire Valley for its spectacular setting: trips to all three are a bit of a must. Restless kids can be calmed down with a potter around ZooParc de Beauval to see its 3,000 or so inhabitants, and with active options such as canoeing on the Loire or pedalling off down the peaceful local paths; look out for the Accueil Vélo (Cyclists Welcome) sign for welcoming pitstops. Paris is two hours and 20 minutes' drive away.
