General
- Family site on a French country estate in a regional natural park
- 45 minutes' drive from Villandry and Futuroscope
- On-site leisure facilities including swimming pool, games room and bar
Lords and ladies, bienvenue to a slice of the good life in the aristo abode you always dreamed of (and fully deserve, natch)... sign up for a stay at Camping du Château de la Rolandière and you can spend your days roaming around the grounds of your own stately home.
It’s not just any old stately home, either – la Rolandière has a fab location in the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park, about 40 minutes’ drive south of Tours. If you feel the need to get out and compare estates, several other châteaux can be visited within 45 minutes or so – both big-hitters like Azay-Rideau and the smaller places that keep this area well-supplied with excellent wines.
You’ll not have a butler (soz) but the site does have a team of staff on hand in the summer months to keep the family heirs busy with all manner of activities including archery classes and games of football. There’s plenty of scope for all ages to make their own entertainment too, with miniature golf, a playground and a games room with table tennis and billiards among the facilities at your disposal around the gardens.
Obviously your dream château must have a swimming pool – in fact la Rolandière goes a step further by providing not just an outdoor swimming pool but also a dedicated paddling pool for the mini splashers. And naturally you’ll be needing a place to relax in the evening while folk bring you drinks and snacks, so you’ll be chuffed to find the bar’s plant-filled terrace making that happen.

Local attractions
You could easily turn your trip into an entirely castle-themed one if you so wished, such is the number within a 45-minute drive. Start at Château d’Ussé, inspiration for the story of Sleeping Beauty, or drive for 25 minutes to Château d’Azay-le-Rideau and its famed water mirror. Villandry, the big daddy of the area’s châteaux, is around 45 minutes’ drive away, and is a fab place to spend the day wandering around the building itself and its vast gardens including the recently restored Sun Garden.
If your interest in châteaux veers more towards the produce of their estates, take a half-hour drive to Chinon or 40 minutes to Bourgueil, both of which function as the epicentres for ambling around vineyards and wineries.
The big family attraction in these parts is Futuroscope theme park, 45 minutes away. Heaps of fun things will keep you occupied all day – rides, immersive shows, exhibitions, kids’ driving tracks and plenty more. For a somewhat calmer day out, the Aquarium du Val-de-Loire is also about 45 minutes away – walk through the shark tunnel and get your hands in the water at the touch pond, full of fish, frogs and unusual beasts like axolotls.
