  • Friendly glamping site on a small island in the Claise river
  • A 45-minute drive to Futuroscope; an hour to ZooParc de Beauval
  • On a voie verte cycle route, with various bikes available to hire
How does the idea of a stay on a private island take you? Perhaps one where you’ll wake to the sound of birdsong in the trees before digging into a breakfast basket full of fresh goodies that’s just been delivered by bike to your accommodation? It might all sound a bit like the preserve of a resort for rich folk, but in fact it’s all here for the guests at Les Vélos de Paulette, a friendly and peaceful place on an island in the Claise river in the Indre-et-Loire village of Abilly. (That breakfast involves a small extra charge, but it’s worth it for the fresh croissants, homemade jam, artisanal honey, local yogurt and hot drinks, so make sure you add it to your booking if you like the sound of that…) As the name of the site suggests, this is a particularly good spot for those exploring by bike (or who would like to). It’s right next to a voie verte for easy traffic-free cycling, with bikes of all varieties available to hire (including tandems, e-bikes and cargo bikes as well as mountain bikes). If you’ve brought your own wheels, you can keep them safe overnight in lockable wooden cabins (free of charge). And that’s not the end of the facilities here – guests also have access to toilets, showers, laundry facilities and a common room with fridge and microwave (pick up supplies at the grocery shop 10 minutes’ walk away). To while away any hours not spent out and about, the site has a tennis court, a pétanque court and games for the kids.

Local attractions

The folk on site here are pretty much experts in the subject of touring the area by bike, so have a chat with them for advice on the best places to head for, whether you’re after easy family outings or more challenging adventures. There are some great walks around too, taking in historic mills, riverside views and attractions like the Grand-Pressigny archaeological site. If you’ve brought the family along, you may need to leave time for outings to a couple of well-known kid-friendly attractions too – namely the thrills of the Futuroscope theme park (45 minutes’ drive) and the animal encounters of ZooParc de Beauval (an hour). Keeping it closer to home, you may like to schedule low-key visits to local places like Museum René Descartes (five minutes) Château de la Guerche (10 minutes) and Château des Ormes (15 minutes), or check out the collection of old vehicles at Grand Atelier, Museum of Art and Industry (25 minutes).
