If you like the idea of staying at a historic landmark, here’s one for you: Camping Manoir de Ker An Poul, 15 minutes’ drive from the lively town of Sarzeau in southern Brittany. Listed as an important monument in 1968 and entered through a 15th-century stone arch, this ancient manor will be the backdrop for your family stay, with pitches set on 6.5 hectares of tree-shaded parkland.
To make sure everyone has a fun-filled and relaxing stay rather than one tied to the kitchen, a terrace restaurant and bar, a takeaway and a grocery store (with fresh bread delivered daily) are all slotted into the manor’s historic inner courtyard, which is also the setting for occasional night-time shows for all the family.
Catering taken care of, what about the activities? Well… there are organised games for younger kids, indoor and outdoor pools – where daily exercise classes are held in high season – with waterslides, and a games room to keep the teens amused. There's also a sports court for ball games, and you can hire bikes too if you’re keen to explore around the Gulf of Morbihan. When you’re looking for some beach action, the quiet expanse of sand at Penvins is just five minutes’ drive away.

With numerous islands scattered across its calm waters, the Gulf of Morbihan (20 minutes’ drive) is a top place to start exploring coastal Brittany. Boat cruises leave from Port Blanc (40 minutes) to pretty Île-aux-Moines for biking, walking and swimming jaunts.
After a mash-up of beach holiday and culture? The Rhuys Peninsula (15 minutes) is surrounded by historic attractions. Once the summer residence of the Dukes of Brittany, the moated Domaine de Suscinio (10 minutes) has exhibits on local life in the Middle Ages. Travel even further back in time for a stroll around the intriguing standing stones at Carnac (50 minutes), and return to medieval times in the fortified town of Vannes (half an hour) with a wander around its cobbled streets, timber-framed houses and historic harbour.
And finally, if you’d like to sample the finest of Brittany’s regional cuisine, head for the bistros and cafés of Sarzeau (15 minutes), where you can order galettes (buckwheat pancakes with savoury fillings) and buttery slices of kouign-amann cake, both best accompanied by a glass of local artisan cider.
