  • Peaceful family campsite on the banks of River Vilaine in the Morbihan
  • Plage de la Mine d’Or 15 minutes’ drive; Tréhiguier 10 minutes
  • Shop, bread delivery and pop-up food trucks; watersports on the river
Looking for a quiet, family-friendly base near southern Brittany’s Atlantic Ocean beaches? Step forward Camping Les Rives de Vilaine, set on the banks of its namesake river five minutes’ drive from Férel, a pretty coastal village in the Morbihan department. Fine sandy beaches include those at Pénestin (15 minutes’ drive) and La Baule-les-Pins (45 minutes), and the site is also handy for adventures along the Guérande Peninsula (half an hour). Parents can relax; the low-key and leafy campsite is far from main roads and completely fenced off for privacy and safety. No need to get fussed about catering, either, as all sorts of foodie services are on hand, including communal barbecues, bread delivery (order the day before at reception), groceries in the on-site shop, pop-up food trucks serving regional galette pancakes (selected evenings) and an all-day snack bar. Books and games are available to borrow, there’s a play area for toddlers and active families can hire bikes, play home ball, table football and ping-pong. Oh, and go kayaking on the River Vilaine too. Dogs are welcome here, and they’ll surely be happy to join you on rambles along the river to Arzal Dam (25 minutes’ walk) to admire the boats in the marina.

Great facilities include, unisex wcs, showers, free freezer, microwave, potable water, soap at hand basins, paper towels and toilet roll! . All areas are exceptionally clean. Site is eco friendly and encourages recycling. Great cycle routes close by and a short walk to the Vilaine River. Pitches are spacious and have shaded areas — welcomed during our stay!

Electric optional grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: The best campsite we’ve been to. The hosts were really helpful and friendly. The facilities were amazing. Generously sized camping plots. Very clean. Very hot water in the showers and for washing/washing up. Hairdryer but also plug sockets for those that need to dry and style their hair (not many places have these). Toilet seats! Toilet paper and hand washing gel. Groceries available at reception and snacks available during the day. Food trucks visited some evenings and we can highly recommend La Quicha which is a croissant style pizza base with toppings of your choice. Absolutely delicious and reasonably priced. You can walk across to Arzal where you will find cafes and restaurants and can take a boat trips. La Roche Bernard is a short car ride away and is a lovely little town with a market on Thursday mornings.

Local attractions

Organise family expeditions along walkways and cycle pathways around Férel (five minutes’ walk), with more than 70km of way-marked trails to discover, or turn inland for a family day at Brocéliande Forest (an hour and 10 minutes’ drive) to disocver follies like Merlin’s tomb and other mythical sights connected with King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. When it’s time for Breton beach outings, pack buckets and spades and head for Plage de la Mine d’Or (15 minutes) or the sweeping crescent in La Baule’s Le Pouliguen Bay (40 minutes). Other options include quiet Plage de Loscolo (15 minutes), backed by cliffs and popular for sunset-viewing, and for more watery excitement, head for Arzal Dam (25 minutes’ walk) for sailing, kitesurfing or canoeing. You can watch the fishing boats as they come and go from the harbour in the tiny, photogenic port of Tréhiguier (10 minutes’ drive), and for a taste of island life, hop on to the ferry from Quiberon (an hour and 20 minutes) to Belle-Île for coastal walks to the Grotte de l’Apothicairerie and seafood suppers in Sauzon.
