  • Peaceful seaside site surrounded by coastal hiking and cycling trails
  • Douarnenez's four fishing ports 20 minutes' drive away
  • Set next to woodland and with direct access to Ty Anquer beach
Contemplating a trip to France’s Brittany region? Then how about a simple stay by the sea in fab Finistère? Set on the edge of a peaceful forest, three minutes’ amble to the golden sands of Ty Anquer beach via a path that takes you direct from the site, Camping de la Mer is set in Douarnenez Bay between Pointe du Raz and the Crozon Peninsula, and within super easy reach of 10 waymarked walking and cycling trails between nearby Ploéven and Ménez-Hom, including the GR 34, which meanders for over 1,800 spectacular kilometres along the beaut Brittany coastline. Flavie and Alexis have set up their spot by the sea serenely among lush landscaping filled with trees and flowering plants; the site is roomy and verdant, and guest accommodation areas are sheltered and provided with partial shade from high hedges. Leisure facilities here include a pétanque pitch, a playground and a games room, plus heaps of grass and woodland space for excitable littlies to hurtle around, plus frazzled grownups to bask, stroll and snooze in. If you’re looking for lots of entertainment in the way of organised activities, karaoke, sports tournaments and swimming pools, this likely isn’t going to be your bag. If, however, you’re looking for somewhere peaceful to return to for a restful slumber after long days filled with swimming and fishing from the beach or exploring hiking trails and lovely local villages – as well with as a friendly vibe and super helpful hosts – then you’ll be most pleased if you pitch up here. During high season there’s fresh bread delivery every morning, and the small site shop has a café attached, open a few evenings a week for entertainment in the way of folk song. The nearest big town of Douarnenez is 20 minutes away by car (or a two-and-a-half-hour coastal hike), and as it’s a fishing port, is a great spot to pick up fresh fish to sizzle on the barbecue before settling back under the starry night sky.

Liked: Friendly and helpful owner who leant us some cycling maps. Good clean facilities. Great location right by beach and coastal footpath. Small site so pretty quiet which we enjoyed.

Disliked: No bread on site due to local bakery having problems - 5 or so minutes drive to nearest village for bread.

Liked: we liked the site owner whio was so helpful. we had problem with our mobile power supply unit and he lent us a spare for our 5 day stay and advised us where to get it fixed. we liked the aspects of this part of finistere being more remote, rugged, and unspoilt. we liked that this rustic site has food evening gatherings and a camaraderie amongst campers as it is a smallish site we liked that it was only 300metres to the sea which you can hear at night. v. soothing

Liked: We loved this little site. It is well organised with everything we needed including a snack bar, ice creams and hot showers. It is right by a magnificent quiet beach with lovely coastal walks for our dog. We can thoroughly recommend it to folks who like to get away from it all! We would certainly come again.

Disliked: The beach has a big tide so it can be quite a walk out for a dip but there are life guards on the main section.

Liked: Great hosts and very welcoming. They were often around the site, so were available for any queries. The toilets (single sex) were cleaned daily and we never had to wait / queue (even in August) The showers (unisex block) were cleaned daily and it only got a bit busy early evening. Water was always hot enough. Every evening they open a small bar / snack van for a few hours, serving burgers, fries, paninis as well as host specialist evenings (crepes - they were delicious! and mussels - we left that day sadly). Fresh daily bread and pastries delivered each morning (although you needed to remember to order by the evening before) Site was very close to the beach, so in a great location (the sea was full of algae though!) All the pitches look extremely flat. The site itself is really peaceful and quiet even though it was fully booked when we were there. There are other campsites along the same stretch of coast, and depending on the wind direction you can hear a bit of their entertainment, but nothing that impacted our visit. The reception area also had a lot of games / books to borrow. There's also a small amount of provisions in reception to buy, but I wouldn't recommend relying on this for your essentials - make sure to stock up before you get there!

From the manager: Guten Morgen, Danke für deine Meinung.

Liked: Very basic site (which we like) with a spectacular location just a few steps to a stunning beach. Nice long coastal path walk past a couple of nice coves. Alex was very helpful at reception and gave us lots of local info. Electric bikes are available for hire but we had our own and cycled to a lovely medieval church Sainte-Marie du Menez Hom near Plomodiern. Toilets and showers were clean. If you like sites without all the fancy facilities you'll like this site.

From the neighbouring beach guests can swim in the sea, go diving and fishing for gilt-head sea bream from the rocks, or settle down by the sea to construct complex sandcastles. Take the tiddlers to see Brest’s aquarium stocks (including seven shark species), or to Douarnenez’s four harbours and maritime museum next to Port-Rhu, to play skipper on the five historic sea vessels docked there. Also within easy reach are activities like sea kayaking, yachting, paragliding, horse riding and hiking.
