A word of advice: don’t forget your swimming cozzie when you’re packing for your stay at Camping Locronan. You’ll need it come rain or shine, as the clever people here have given their pool a nifty cover that means you can continue your holiday splashing in comfort whatever the weather. As its name might suggest, this family site is close to the village of Locronan – in fact it’s a leisurely stroll of around ten minutes, either along the road or on a footpath. Most of your day-to-day essentials are here: restaurants, bars, a grocery shop and the all-important pâtisserie and crêperie. A larger supermarket is four kilometres away. Onsite fun isn’t limited to the pool – there’s also a playground, table tennis and outdoor games to play. Bring your tennis racquet too if you fancy a game, as there’s a court a couple of minutes’ walk from the property. Pitches themselves are well-sized and clearly marked out with hedges and trees for privacy and shade. The central services area contains a toilet block and a launderette with washing machine and clothes line, and there's free wifi access for guests as well.

Local attractions

Your first outing on arrival will most likely be a wander down to the village of Locronan, and it’s not just essential services to be had here. It’s a pretty little place – the village square is all stone houses with colourful shutters and floral displays, and it’s worth popping in to the local church too. There’s also a glassworks where you can sometimes see the artisans in action as well as buying some fab jewellery and homewares. From then on, it’s up to you what you’d like to do – beaches, museums and outdoor activities are all within easy reach. Should you fancy a trip to the beach, a 10-minute drive will take you to the sands of Kervel beach, or you could make the 20-minute trip to Plage des Sables Blancs, which has not only white sands but also beach volleyball and watersports rentals. If you prefer your beaches wilder, walk for a kilometre along the coast path and you’ll get to the smaller and less developed Saint-Jean beach. Also along the coast are several towns and villages worth visiting. Douarnenez, 12 kilometres from the site, is a port town with four harbours where you can watch the boats coming and going from the terrace of a seafront café or restaurant. To see the boats up close, head to the town’s port museum – it’s got several vessels in permanent wet dock, and you can climb on board to see what life is like inside, and play at being captain for the day. Just off the coast of Douarnenez is Tristan Island, home to a ruined fort and a clutch of natural attractions. It's only reachable at low tide so it's highly recommended that you join a guided tour from the tourist office – you'll get plenty of fun anecdotes as well as peace of mind about tide times. Turning away from the coast, it's a four-kilometre journey from the property to the Névet Forest, a 225-hectare site that's crossed with a network of paths for cycling and walking. All sorts of routes are planned out for you, from 20-minute flat walks to more challenging whole-day outings. There are also dedicated trails for horse riding and mountain bikes. For more urban wanderings, head down to Quimper, 18 kilometres away, and take a walk through its well-preserved old town. You can also take a boat trip along the town's two rivers, visit the Gothic cathedral and peruse the displays at the Fine Arts Museum or the Breton Departmental Museum.
