  • Spacious family-friendly Finistère site on the edge of Bannalec
  • Pont-Aven 15 minutes' drive; half an hour to Quimper or Lorient
  • Games room, play area and pétanque on site, plus summer bar
This is a handy location indeed for a Finistère family holiday – Camping Les Genêts d’Or is on the edge of the town of Bannalec, so it’s peaceful and spacious but within easy reach of shops, supermarkets and places to eat and drink. That location also makes this site a strategic base for all sorts of Brittany days out, including trips to Quimper, Lorient, Concarneau and a cluster of beaches along the sheltered southern coastline. The pretty village of Pont-Aven is 15 minutes’ drive away and known as a source of inspiration for the painter Paul Gaugin (although the kids may be more interested in its famous biscuits…) All of this means it should be easy to pack your days full of interesting activities around the area – but what if you’d simply like to stay put for a while and relax? Well, this is a good spot for that too, as it’s quiet, spacious and surrounded by calming greenery. A play area, a pétanque court, a table tennis area and an indoor games room mean there’s something to keep the more active types busy, and there’s a wifi connection for those who’d rather spend some quality time with their favourite gadget. Getting everyone fed should be straightforward too – all the town amenities are just up the road, but the site itself has a barbecue area, and in high season it’s also got a small grocery store and a bread service for ordering your breakfast deliveries. Through July and August you can also buy ice creams, craft beers and other drinks at the bar.

Local attractions

Pont-Aven (15 minutes’ drive) is a highlight of this area – stroll across its many bridges and spot its old mills and you’ll see why it was a favourite of painter Paul Gaugin (and so attractive that it inspired a post-Impressionist group known as the Pont-Aven school). There are several towns worth visiting down at the coast as well. Lorient is a maritime town with the interactive sailing museum Cite de la Voile Eric Tabarly and Keroman Submarine Base to visit; it’s also the boarding point for trips to the island of Groix. Concarneau has a fishing museum and the Marinarium, and you can take a walk around its old ramparts. Both are half an hour’s drive away. A half-hour drive will also get you down to some gorgeous beaches (Plage de Tahiti, near Raguénez, is a particular favourite, and there are some great sands near Clohars-Carnoët as well). Meanwhile, turning back inland, the narrow streets of Quimper (half an hour's drive) are worth a visit, or you could get up into the trees at Adrénature Adventure Park (15 minutes).
