It’s all about finding a bit of rural relaxation at La Billardière – Audrey and Yann have set up their Lower Normandy site to welcome guests to a peaceful spot with just enough facilities to make things comfortable (without distracting from the calm of the countryside). Come along to this small farm site just outside Le Ménil-Ciboult and you’ll be sharing the space with the residents that call this place home all year round – including goats, sheep, chickens, donkeys, dogs and cats. They’re a friendly bunch, and cute too – if you’re here at the right time you may be able to join in with bottle-feeding lambs. As this is primarily a home for the animals, the site owners have chosen to keep visitor facilities to a minimum, but you’ll have access to compost toilets, a barbecue area and a dog exercise area where your four-legged friends can have a bit of a run around. The nearest supermarket for your barbecue/picnic supplies is five minutes’ drive away in Tinchebray-Bocage, but you can make life even simpler by including breakfast with your booking (delivered fresh to you each morning). There’s also coffee available on site in the mornings to give you a good kickstart. How might you fill your days around here when not fussing over the animals? Well, perhaps a waterfall walk, a château visit or one of the family-friendly adventure activities available nearby? And for those of you who’ve never been before, an outing to Mont Saint-Michel (about an hour’s drive away) should certainly be on the cards…

Liked: The donkeys, the goats, the hens, the dogs and cats. Oh - and of course the owners. This is a great little place for getting back to nature. Not so great if you like luxury flushing toilets. But it was an experience and it isn’t half as bad as you expect, just make sure you have a torch. One of the loveliest touches was the breakfasts which we ordered each morning and were beautifully given to us each with hot coffee and tea.

Disliked: Nothing, but you have to get used to compost toilets. Oh and the donkeys were rather loud sometimes at night!

Liked: Wunderschöner, ruhiger, kleiner familiärer Bauernhof. Mit einer sehr netten Familie und leckeren Imbiss. Wir würden jederzeit nochmal dort Urlaub machen. Der Campingplatz bietet alles was Kinderherzen sich wünschen. Freilaufende Tiere wie Esel mit Baby , Hühner mit Kücken, Katzen mit Babys und Hunde. Und andere Tiere wie Emus noch mehr Esel, Ziegen, Schafe und Kühe, die man streichen und beobachten kann. Viel Platz zum entdecken und rum zu toben. Die Familie war total herzlich und super gastfreundlich. Besten Dank an sie für die schöne Zeit und tolle Erinnerung.

Liked: Petit voyage maman avec son fils de 11 ans, nous avons été super bien accueilli par Audrey,Yann, leur fille et les nombreux animaux.. super beau cadre, permettant un chouette échange avec les proprios et les campeurs de différents horizons. J ai adoré la douche dans l ancienne étable, découvert les toilettes sèches 🤣🤣, le petit-déjeuner régional miam miam

Liked: a very beautiful and clean site. Be sure to not step on the chicken when exiting your mobile, and greet the little sweet donkey :-) be sure to sit at the bar in the evening to get in contact to friendly people. Be aware of the compost toilet.

Liked: Friendly and approachable owners. Loads of interesting animals. Good play facilities for children. Nice grassy pitches and hardstand for camping cars. Shop / bar and cafe on site.

Disliked: Compost toilets. Not enough light in the bathroom. A separate dish washing area would be fantastic.

Local attractions

Decided to see a bit more of your rural surroundings? You can do so at a leisurely pace with a stroll around the waterfalls in Mortain (20 minutes’ drive), or at rather higher speed with an adventurous downhill ride at Normandie Luge (half an hour). If that’s got your taste for adrenaline going, there are more exciting antics to get stuck into (ziplines, treetop courses and bungee jumping) at AJ Hackett Normandie adventure park (35 minutes). Back down at ground level, slow the pace with a trip to the Musée régional de la poterie (10 minutes) or a wander around the ruins of Château de Domfront (25 minutes). If such things aren;t a hit with the kids, try The Enchanted Village amusement park (20 minutes) instead, or head over to Zoo de Champrépus (45 minutes). The big draw around these parts, however, has to be Mont Saint-Michel (an hour) – the towering abbey on an offshore island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of France’s most-visited attractions. In summer it stays open until midnight and makes a fine sunset trip.
