Le Château de Monfréville

- Camp in the grounds of a 16th-century castle near D-Day landing sites
- A 20-minute drive to Ohama beach; half an hour to Utah beach
- Outdoor swimming pool, games room and shared fridge-freezers on site
Turn back time to the 16th century and armoured soldiers would have once roamed around these castle grounds… Le Château de Monfréville has been around since the time of William the Conqueror and over the years, it has housed Walt Disney's ancestor, operated as a German hospital and protected soldiers during World War II. Nowadays, it’s occupied by friendly and attentive owners Perrine and Thibault, and the historic mansion grounds make for a family-friendly getaway that’s equal parts relaxing and historical…
So, park up beside the leafy apple orchard. A vintage tractor will transport you to the grounds below the sandblasted stones and the romantic round tower, as the owners make a point of honouring and preserving the natural setting by keeping pitches vehicle free.
They call it a typical French environment – carefully managed, comfy and ultra pleasant. The spacious grassy pitches are centred around a pond, and they’re limited in numbers, so it’s never too crowded. It’s thoroughly family-friendly too: there’s a games room with ping pong and table football, a few swings and a swimming pool that overlooks the oldest, 15th-century castle wall.
Very friendly chickens run free around the site and in the field next door, your neighbours include a horse, two ponies and a donkey. Catering and oenology evenings (that’s the study of wine, by the way) are held several times a week. As for all the stuff that’s handy to have, the castle cellars also hold well-maintained showers and toilets, power outlets, fridge-freezers and a washing machine.
It's not just the surrounding splendid Normandy countryside and local D-Day landing beaches such as Ohama beach (20 minutes’ drive) and Utah beach (half an hour) that make this such a fine location. Perrine and Thibault have taken care to create a rural laidback feel – this extends to the tiny on-site honesty shop and animal farm.
