  • Peaceful site a five-minute drive from La Tour d’Auvergne village
  • Chastreix trailheads five minutes’ drive; La Bourboule 20 minutes
  • On the river Burande; snack bar for dinner; breakfast if booked ahead
A curve of the river Burande hugs the tree-lined pitches of Camping la Vallée, a peaceful site on the western fringes of the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d’Auvergne, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, central France. The site sits at an altitude of 900 metres in the shadow of the Puy de Sancy peak, part of the Massif Central. Which is just another way of saying that this is prime walking territory, so be sure to pack your hiking boots. Trails start from Chastreix (five minutes’ drive) or Sancy (15 minutes), or you might want to tackle the summit from the northeastern side, starting at Le Mont-Dore (25 minutes). Here the less active members of your expedition can ride the Funiculaire du Capucin all the way to the top. After your big mountain hike, you might fancy a day doing very little, and a top spot for that is the nearby Lac de la Tour-d’Auvergne (five minutes or a 15-minute walk), with supervised swimming in the summer months. The lawn around the lake is dotted with facilities, including a playground, tennis courts and a picnic area. Speaking of food… A snack bar on site serves burgers, croques monsieurs and other simple dishes; they also do breakfasts – but remember to book the day before. Not a huge problem if you do forget, mind, for there is a good boulangerie in the village of La Tour d’Auvergne (five minutes), where there are also a handful of restaurants and shops.

Liked: Schöne Umgebung. Sauber

Local attractions

Besides swimming in the lake, water-based activities include paddling in the Burande, fishing at La Pêcherie de la Tour (three minutes’ walk) and checking out the waterfalls dotting the local area, like Cascade Sainte-Élisabeth (10 minutes’ walk), which crashes down a rocky mountain in four tiers. On the river Dordogne, La Bourboule (20 minutes’ drive) draws visitors with its elegant thermal complex. Parc Fenestre is an amusement park with spinning tea cups and other rides for young children, but it also caters to tween- and teenagers with trampolines and a treetop course. At L’Aventure Michelin, in Clermont-Ferrand (one hour and five minutes), you can learn all about the famed tyre brand and its logo: Bibendum, aka the Michelin Man. The nearby Musee d’Art Roger Quilliot is housed in a former convent. Anchored at one end by a dynamic equestrian statue, vast Place de Jaude is lined with shops and cafés.
