  • Family-friendly campsite with shaded pitches in an Haute-Loire village
  • Parc Family Aventure five minutes’ drive; Le-Puy-En-Velay 50 minutes
  • Angling, swimming, shops and restaurants all within five minutes’ walk
With plenty of tree shade and secluded grass pitches, Camping La Fressange has a rural location in the Haute-Loire. It’s in the outskirts of the medieval village of Saint-Didier-en-Velay (five minutes’ walk to the centre), with all the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region just waiting to be explored – and that includes the volcanic Massif Central hills and the Loire river. This is a wonderful spot for active families. You can venture out by car or up the pace of your holiday with hiking, climbing and mountain-biking adventures (hire bikes on site). If you prefer to stay closer to base, there’s masses going off, from open-air massages (extra charge) to angling on the lake at Saint-Didier-en-Velay – buy fishing permits at reception. All guests can use the municipal pool opposite the campsite, and in high season, there are also archery sessions and alfresco film screenings for all the family. And of course, the Auvergne is a gastronomic destination where you can pick up cured cold meats in farmers’ markets for riverside picnics, or settle down in a cosy auberge to sample the local ‘soupe au chou’, a tasty soup made with cabbage, pork and potato. If you’re doing the self-catering thing, pick up your daily baguettes and bits and bobs from the stores in the village.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Beautiful site, really friendly and helpful. Arrived on film night, yes an open-air film just for the campsite. Everything was superb.

Disliked: We were unlucky with the storm that arrived on our last day. Campsite staff were so kind going out of their way to shelter my partner and children from the hail, and making sure everyone was okay.

Electric optional grass pitch

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Really lovely campsite with large pitches and great facilities right on the edge of St Didier en Valey, which is a charming little town. The municipal swimming pool is free to use for campers and right outside the campsite … well worth a trip! Staff are very friendly and super helpful … woukd certainly recommend a stay over!

Disliked: Nothing really … just Wi-Fi is a bit dodgy but it’s a small point. Loved out time here 👍🏻

Local attractions

If you’d like to learn about the history of the Auvergne, tour mine shafts at Puits Couriot Parc–Musée De La Mine (half an hour’s drive), or fit in a trip to the wildlife dioramas at the Musée Crozatier (50 minutes) in Le Puy-En-Velay (don’t miss the medieval church perched on a volcanic plug). For something a bit more up to date, check out the statuesque modernist architecture at the Site Le Corbusier (20 minutes) in Firminy. If the kids have behaved during your cultural trips, reward them with birds of prey displays at hilltop Castle Rochebaron (half an hour), or spend the day swimming and boating on the river at Aurec-sur-Loire (20 minutes). Or how about an afternoon on the rope courses at Parc Family Aventure (five minutes)? Still got loads of energy? Try wearing them out on the Vélorail Velay pedal train (15 minutes) through the Haute Loire foothills, or see the Auvergne countryside on foot or by bike; try the circular trail around the Barrage de Lavalette (half an hour), making sure to stop at the dam for views over volcanic hills.
