No false advertising here: Camping La Plage (which translates as ‘the beach’) sits within sniffing distance of the Atlantic Ocean, less than half a mile (that’s about 10 minutes on foot) from the wide, sandy beach of Mimizan Plage, in the Landes region of south-western France. If you’re into watersports – and especially if you’re into watersports that necessitate strong breezes (surfing, kitesurfing, wing foiling…) – this is a pretty sweet spot: the Bay of Biscay is known for its windy conditions. And with plenty of surf schools along the beach, nobody needs to feel left out of the action. But before you break out the surfboard, you might want to explore your home for the holidays. Shaded by pine trees, Camping La Plage scores highly in terms of practical features, with a mini-market, a bakery for your breakfast pastries, a bar and a restaurant serving local specialities (plus a toilet block with disabled facilities, hot-water showers and a launderette). In addition, this is a canine-friendly site, with its own dog park. Entertainment-wise, you’re also sorted here: you can pack the children off to kids’ club (or let them loose in the play area) while you pamper yourself with a treatment at the on-site beauty institute; if you feel active, you can rally the troops and challenge fellow guests to a game of football or basketball, or to a mini-golf tournament. And then there’s the aquatic park, with heated indoor and outdoor pools, waterslides and a splash zone for the kids, and lots of sun loungers.

Liked: well laid out site with good clean toilet/showers, ample for the site. Very friendly, helpful staff. Good shop on site which was slightly cheaper than the nearest small supermarket. Beautiful fresh bread and croissants, the bread being baked all through the day every day. Excellent location, walking distance from the town and beach

Disliked: the cost was slightly more than other sites but this reflects the high staffing levels required for the childrens' club and the entertainment none of which we necessarily wanted but hey-we picked the campsite for the location so no complaints. Couples with young children would find it well worth it

Liked: Es war einfach ein Traum , der Campingplatz ist zwar nicht neu aber sehr übersichtlich und man hatte das Gefühl es wären alles Dauercämper auf dem Platz , aber nicht negativ da die Franzosen sehr öffen und freundlich zu uns waren .
Die Strand und Stadt Nähe waren auch perfekt .
Pool war für uns und die Kids auch perfekt .

Liked: Amazing swimming pool, great facilities, stunning sandy beaches with surf, lots of nearby cafes and restaurants. Absolutely loved it.

Disliked: Kids club didn’t speak English very well so our 5 year old wasn’t keen to go!

Landes Adventure Park (10 minutes’ drive) has treetop courses for all ages and abilities. Young children can potter about the discovery trail, growing confident on net swings and rope bridges, while adults can face their fear of heights head on by having a go on tightrope walks and ziplines. At La Promenade Fleurie (10 minutes) you can stroll among fragrant seasonal flowers (including hydrangeas and dahlias) and colourful exotic plants. After exploring this luxuriant garden, head to the Étang d'Aureilhan pond, where you can embark on a circular lakeside walk that takes you past a beach and a spot where you can hire a canoe. In addition to woodland hiking and cycling paths, the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park (half an hour) is home to the Écomusée de Marquèze (45 minutes), an open-air museum illustrating life in the region in the 1800s (including original buildings and recreated landscapes), plus the striking works of La Forêt d’Art Contemporain trail.
