It's free, quick and easy!
- A large waterpark with seven heated swimming pools
- Leave the car behind: direct access to the beach
- Well-equipped site with tennis court, skate park and restaurant
It's all rather watery at Le Vieux Port in the Aquitaine department of Landes. For not only is it in a warm and popular area of southwest France seaside resort celebrated for its beaches, sunny climes and surfing, it's got a whopping great waterpark on site too.
The Vieux Port waterpark is fully heated and has a stonking seven pools as well as waterslides, a whirlpool and a wave pool: chuck the car keys somewhere out of sight and get into your swimming togs for days' worth of dips. A sandy Atlantic Ocean beach is a short walk away, so do remember to bring your surfboard, body board and other floaty bits and pieces for riding the waves...
Once you're out of the water (eventually) and casting around for something else to do, the site prides itself on its high standards and wide range of facilities, including a playground, an open-air fitness area, a multisports pitch, a tennis court, a skate park, a snack bar, a restaurant and a supermarket, all set away from the accommodation area to ensure peace and quiet when you finally totter back to berth.
The site welcomes international guests and the friendly multilingual team is always around to help when needed – they're the people to chat to for booking activities (such as surfing, canyoning or rafting) too.

Local attractions
If you do manage to remove yourself/the kids from the waterpark and local beach, you'll find a fair bit to do within about ten kilometres of Le Vieux Port, such as golf, hiking, cycling, go karting and surfing and other watersports.
Food and flea markets are easy to get to in the area too, along with old and trad Landes villages to mosey around: try Messanges, Vieux Boucau les Bains and Moliets-et-Maa Soustons, sampling the local cuisine in each. If you want to delve more into the local character and traditions of Landes, over 200 town and village festivals run around the region from April to November, or one could get very involved and look out for a nearby game of pelote basque…?
One could also sink into the relaxing atmosphere of the nearby spa town of Dax or ride the waves (again) in Hossegor and Capbreton; this latter has miles of sandy beaches too, as well as options for rockpooling, oyster catching and having much seafood from its popular fishy restaurants.
If you're up for travelling a bit further, Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz are reachable from here, as is San Sebastián, a European City of Culture for 2016. The Rhune train ride through the Basque Country and the Pyrenees is also quite a bit of a must.
