It's only 10 minutes to the beach from the peaceful family site of Camping Le Bonheur est dans le Pré – and what a beach it is.
Your local sands are that of Vendays-Montalivet on the Médoc peninsula, the Gironde estuary town with a whopping 12 kilometres of fine golden beach on France's Côte d'Argent. This is a top spot for surfing; thousands of hectares of pine forest edge the sands for rambling and cycling, and you may also be interested to hear the local gastronomy has a nicely heavy emphasis on wine and oysters.
Designed for calm times at base in between all the beach days and peninsula/wine exploring, Camping Le Bonheur est dans le Pré is a green and quiet place set over one and a half hectares, with pitches on grass and among trees. You can sort your own eats here with ease: the small grocery shop sells bread, ice cream, snacks and breakfast bits, and there's a communal barbecue area for prepping more substantial suppers (barbecued oysters, perhaps...).
The essentials include an amenities block with hot water; a launderette and chemical disposal. Bike rental is available too: if you're up for it, it's about 45 minutes' ride from the site to that splendid sandy beach.

Local attractions
Montalivet or Vendays-Montalivet is a spectacular setting for a French seaside holiday: with watersports, hiking and horse riding all around, family days aplenty, and castles and vineyards within easy day trip distance. Bordeaux is under an hour and a half away.
Another beach resort town, Soulac-sur-Mer, is half an hour's drive north. It's a top spot for Médoc peninsula surfing as well as for idling on its four beaches; there's also a museum of art and archaeology if you think the kids would be interested... From Soulac it's 55 minutes car and ferry journey to Royan, the famed and viewsome main city on the Côte de Beauté and the Arvert peninsula.
To the south is Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans, one of the biggest in France and a top destination for watersports, fishing and lakeside ambles and bike rides on the marked trails.
