  • Quiet site with plenty of shade in the Médoc wine-growing region
  • A five-minute drive to a lakefront beach; 10 minutes to the coast
  • Grocery shop, pétanque and occasional themed nights on site
For a friendly stay with forest vibes, you’ve hit the jackpot at Camping Liberté Lacanau. This small family site is quiet, with lots of shade from gorgeous woodlands, and it has a visitor in the form of a food truck on certain evenings. There’s lots to do on site, from having a drink over a game of pétanque to relaxing in the woodlands or attending one of the themed evenings or concerts which the family arranges on select evenings. There's lots to do when you set foot out of the gates too, as being based between Lacanau and Lacanau-Océan has its perks, the first being that there’s a lakefront beach five minutes’ drive away. The second? There are watersports centres, a treetop adventure park and the ocean (for sailing, kitesurfing and so on…) 10 minutes’ drive away. There's plenty more to list off, but first must come the fact that Camping Liberté Lacanau is in the wine-growing region of Médoc; there are handfuls and handfuls of chateaus within a 20- to 30-minute drive of the site. An equestrian centre is five minutes’ walk away. Plus, the Gironde estuary and Arcachon Bay are both half an hour’s drive from the site (in opposite directions), with stunning views. Wondering about the facilities on site? For food, there’s a grocery store stocked with local produce and bread and pastries are also delivered during high season. Guests can scrub up nicely in the toilet and shower block and tend to laundry at the washing machine. A bus stop serving Line 702 is a 10-minute walk from the site.

Electric grass and sand pitch

Liked: Emplacement calme, plat et bien ombragé. Le personnel et au top. Les installations sont propres.

Disliked: Il serait peut-être bien de songer à des tapis pour éviter qu'on salise trop rapidement les lieux communs.

Local attractions

Between Arcachon Bay and the Gironde estuary, Camping Liberté Lacanau is mightily convenient for trips to the sea, estuary or lake. Ocean-bound first? There are a trio of beaches (15 minutes’ drive) accessible from Lacanau-Océan, as well as watersports and surf centres. You might want to slot in a little stroll before visiting one of the local vineyards. There are some splendid walks in Réserve Naturelle de l'Étang de Cousseau (10 minutes) for that. Set your sights on Arcachon Bay south of the site for dunes, historic sites, gorgeous sandy beaches and local markets. Dune of Pilat (an hour and 10 minutes) is the highest dune in Europe, so while it’s a little further away than some of the other attractions, it’s worth it for the snaps. For some architecture-induced gawping, the Historic Le Quartier de la Ville d'Hiver (an hour and 10 minutes) has stunning villas of the late 19th century and early 20th century.
