  • Getaways on a wine estate in the countryside around Cénac
  • Historic Bordeaux 40 minutes’ drive; near to cycling trails
  • Wine tasting activities and bicycle hire on site; wine for sale
It’s not every day you have a chance to take part in a wine-tasting experience on your holiday, but at Château du Garde in Cénac, you can do exactly that. Every evening from 7pm, guests have the opportunity to participate in a tasting session of three Côtes-de-Bordeaux appellation wines on the on-site wine estate. And at this peaceful and leafy wine estate deep in Nouvelle-Aquitaine countryside, 40 minutes' drive from central Bordeaux, you can rest up at a no-frills site with views over rows of neatly planted vines. Perhaps set down for a splendid sunset from the garden furniture (with, as a bonus, a glass of wine in hand). If you're feeling active, rent a bicycle from the site and take the cycle path (800 metres away) to Bordeaux. Spacious, choose-your-own pitches are spread across a level field, with simple facilities running to a wooden toilet hut, composting toilets drinking water and a waste-emptying service. If you’d like to eat alfresco while you’re there, you can rent barbecues and buy kindling in the form of a bunch of vine twigs or visit the food trucks which are set up several evenings per week. The site can also arrange a four-hour guided bike tour and lunch in Bordeaux or Entre-Deux-Mers (for groups of two to 12 people), as well as return trips to Bordeaux every other Friday evening. They need to be booked in advance if you want to take part on your day of arrival.

Liked Fantastic views and peaceful location with lots of space to pitch. Host very friendly and did a great wine presentation.

Disliked Owners dog comes around constantly and takes food off your table, your cooker and makes a mess of your rubbish bag.

Liked The road out.

Disliked It's a field , with a rather primitive wooden century Box as a toilet . Dogs a scavenger and needs to be in a leash , gets aggressive if you deprive it of any food it decides it wants . If we're Pitchup , I'd remove it from my portfolio. It's not worth your 1€ commission.

From the manager: Bonjour,

Bien cordialement.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked Quiet, basic campsite, exactly what we were looking for as a one night stop over on the way from Dieppe to Spain.

Thank you to the friendly owner for the offer to draw a map showing the shortcut to the town so that I could get breakfast in the morning. In the end we slept late and moved on straightaway.

Definitely a place to return.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked Stayed overnight by the vineyard. The view was lovely.

Disliked After the positive reviews, we were disappointed. The option of hiring a barbecue was flagged on the site but when we asked we were put off as the owner had to attend to other customers, which turned out to be one other couple. In the event we didn’t get the barbecue.
The wine tasting was ok; he is clearly an enthusiast. However, the quality was not quite as expected and the price when the overnight stay on a patch of grass and the tasting was included meant we paid a lot for rather ordinary wine.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked Bernoit was the perfect host and it was fascinating to hear his family history on the vineyard. Delicious wines - we bought several boxes.

On arrival, we did find the ‘facilities’ highly amusing: A sentry box all on its own. However the compost toilet worked perfectly well and was nowhere near as bad as we had feared. All good.

Disliked Just an observation rather than a dislike…. Caesar his dog is beautiful, well behaved & friendly. We are dog people. However, we were unable to eat outside as he was trying to get to our food, so 4 of us crammed into our T5 was a little cosy, and a bit of a shame as we’d rather sit outside and eat. Two ladies next to us were getting very frustrated with him and I think he nicked the food from their stove.

Warm welcome and wine tasting…

Liked Stunning site, very open and great being next to the vineyard. Wine tasting was excellent and the host was very welcoming and we enjoyed hearing the history of the vineyard whilst drinking fantastic wine. Would definitely stay again.

Disliked The dog, whilst friendly, stole our trash bag and ripped it to shreds. Would have been 5/5 if it wasn’t for that.

Very good value for having our own personal campsite & wine tasting.

Liked What a beautiful place for a stay. This area is very peaceful and stunning views over the vineyard.

We were made most welcome by the host (and his great dog).

The wine tasting is a must and the passion from the owner is inspiring. His wine is fantastic.

This place is a must stop if you are in the area.

Local attractions

Centre of its namesake wine-growing region, Bordeaux (40 minutes' drive) is just the spot for a day of big-city sightseeing; admire the “Water Mirror” installation in the vast Place de la Bourse, and have a nose around the 18th-century, UNESCO-listed city centre. If you’d like to learn more about local vintages, make for La Cité du Vin, a museum housed in a spectacular avant-garde edifice on the banks of the Garonne River. Still in Bordeaux, taste regional wines at bars in the lively Darwin Ecosystem dining hub, housed in a repurposed barracks. Alternatively, blow the budget on a glass of claret and a sharing platter of charcuterie and cheese in Place Pey-Berland, all the while enjoying views of the medieval, Gothic-style Cathédrale Saint-André. When the kids need a day off museums and culture to get active, take them to run about on treetop rope courses at Arbor Et Sens (10 minutes), or treat them to camel treks from La Ferme Exotique (25 minutes). Push the sporting gear up a notch for cable-skiing adventures on the lake at EXO 33 Baurech (15 minutes).
