  • Family campsite near major attractions in the Dordogne
  • A 20-minute drive to Lascaux caves; half an hour to Château Hautefort
  • Pool, Jacuzzi, mini farm, play area, bar, restaurant and shop on site
A stay at Camping La Salvinie puts you right in the middle of the scenic Dordogne region, close to major visitor attractions including the prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux, hilltop castles like Château Hautefort and pretty towns like Sarlat and Montignac. And the site has much more going on – it’s all set up for family holidays, from the privacy of the spacious, tree-shaded pitches to the mini farm and organised fun in the kids’ club (bowling, snooker and such antics). In high season, the action centres on the slides at the pool, where parents can relax in the Jacuzzi while keeping watch over their children. Catering is all taken care of too, with a constant supply of ice cream and waffles available at the licensed snack bar, which also turns out fried chicken on Sunday lunchtimes and mussels on Tuesday evenings – there’s a delivery service too if you don’t feel like stirring from your pitch. Breakfast pastries and baguettes are available each morning, and there are all sorts of delicious Périgord delicacies and wines sold in the store, as well as a few camping basics. Dogs are welcome here – and you can all enjoy long walks through the countryside, and strolls along the Vézère river, direct from your pitch.

What customers say

Grand site for families, spotless pitches, top facilities incl. pool. Staff are lovely & helpful. Near Terrasson & Montignac for food/shopping. Mostly great stays, though some had slow snacks, noisy neighbours or wonky cocktails.

Electric grass and earth pitch

Liked It was so professionally run by the couple. Toilets and showers meticulous. Pitch was big. Loved the little farm area. The 2 nearest villages were great.

Disliked Only issue was with the cocktails. So not what we're on menus. Need to do a coarse on hiw to present them.

Local attractions

Start your Dordogne adventure by having a potter through the cobbled streets of Terrasson-Lavilledieu (five minutes’ drive), where you can visit the Bovetti Chocolate Museum (the tasting bit may go down well with the kids) and saunter around scented gardens and woodland paths at the Jardins de l’Imaginaire. The Lascaux caves (20 minutes) are on most Dordogne bucket lists, but there are other subterranean attractions in the area. The caverns at Gouffre de Proumeyssac (55 minutes) host a spectacular underground sound-and-light show, and there are guided tours around stalactites and stalagmites in Tourtoirac Cave (half an hour). Château visits are often high up on the list of things to do around the Dordogne – and there are a couple of lovely ones nearby. The 17th-century Château Hautefort (half an hour) has spectacular formal gardens, and you can admire river views from once-fortified Château de Losse (20 minutes) before touring its lavish apartments. Château des Milandes (an hour) was once home to singer Josephine Baker, and displays showcase her life. Kids restless by now? Treat them to wolf encounters at Thot Park (25 minutes) or visit the brown bears in spacious enclosures at Le Regourdou (20 minutes).
