Bound for the Dordogne and looking for somewhere peaceful to lay your head? Le Petit Tonnelier has to be a contender for your attention. Set in rural grounds five minutes’ drive/15 minutes’ walk from the quiet village of Saint-Sauveur, this site has a choice of luxurious family-friendly accommodation units with lots of thoughtful extras like welcome packs, complimentary shower products and bed linen all provided, along with well-equipped kitchens and ensuite showers. While on site, you can exercise any canine companions on walks around the leafy grounds, let kids loose on the swings and swim a few laps of the outdoor pool, set in neatly maintained gardens. Off the property, you have the option to tour legendary Bergerac wine estates like Château de Monbazillac (20 minutes’ drive), take leisurely strolls along the banks of the Dordogne river or visit local produce and craft markets. There’s a bakery in Saint-Sauveur, where you can pick up fresh bread and pastries every morning, and a large supermarket for replenishing stocks of food (the site has a campfire for family alfresco cookouts), Périgord cheeses and Bergerac wines in Creysse (10 minutes).

La Forêt 2 bedroom safari tent

Liked 2 words - Peaceful and Tranquil.

We happened to be the only ones staying however with 2 other "camping" areas and 1 cottage, there is more than enough space that the peace and tranquility would be carried through in a full site. The hosts were very attentive, checking in on us to see if we have everything we needed.

It was unusually chilly for a September in the south west of France, however that did not affect us, extra blankets and even an electric fire was provided to keep us snug in the lodge even when it started to hail!

The site also has a pool, we used once, and very much enjoyed despite the chilly air. the robot mower was also a hit, seeing it mowing around the site keeping the grass short, and even making us jump once or twice as it "snuck" up on us. the family are lovely and this is a wonderful get away for couples or families able to cater to everyone. they offer massages on site, and even will "click and Collect" style shop so the lodge is full of your groceries ready for when you arrive.

Disliked No real dislikes - but we all know some can be picky.
Phone Signal - iffy at times but that could be due to the storms.
Wifi - FREE and Able to be used - however would drop around 8pm each night - assuming we share with the main house and hosts and it couldn't quite reach us anymore. we went for the "Off the grid" style holiday and so phones were not needed and the Wifi was not missed.
In the middle of nowhere - which we personally loved - but if you are looking for a stay with places within walking distance - this is not the place for you. the boulangerie (bakery) is within walking distance, but the hill is steep and not suitable for those who get out of puff easily.

It will be a pleasure to see you again next year and I'll make sure the wifi stop dropping at 8 pm :)

Local attractions

If you’re keen to sample some Pécharmant wines, stroll into Saint-Sauveur (15 minutes’ walk) for a tour of the vineyards and a tasting session at Château Terre Vieille - Pécharmant. Big local wine producers under the Bergerac appellation, including Château de Monbazillac (20 minutes) and Château de Tiregand (10 minutes), are also open for guided tours. You can learn more about local wine at the Maison des Vins in Bergerac’s spectacular Cloître des Récollets (15 minutes) bordering the Dordogne river. From there, have a look around the town’s ancient centre, which is full of pretty piazzas lined with pastel-coloured half-timbered houses. After a souvenir straw basket? Head for the Sunday morning craft market in Issigeac (20 minutes). Gorgeous Sarlat-la-Canéda (about an hour) is also host to one of the region’s best food markets (Wednesday and Saturday mornings). When your interest lies in being more active, join the long-distance Voie Verte bike path (10 minutes by bike) for gentle cycling adventures along a former railway line. For a family adventure, try the Terra Aventura treasure hunt around the historic fortified town of Beaumont-du-Périgord (25 minutes’ drive).
