  • Spacious, shaded pitches five minutes' drive from Montignac-Lascaux
  • Lascaux caves and Vézère canoeing within walking/cycling distance
  • Massages and restaurant on site, plus local produce for sale
The Lascaux caves are famed the world over for their exceptional prehistoric art – and you'll be in prime position to visit them when you stay at Camping le Sorbier. This peaceful site is a couple of miles from the town of Montignac-Lascaux and the caves, so it's easy to get to either by car, by bike or even on foot. The caves may be the big local draw, but they’re far from the only attraction in the area. Stays here might also involve outings to châteaux, canoeing on the Vézère, cycling through the rural scenery or trips to pretty towns like Sarlat-la-Canéda or Périgueux. And of course, this is the Périgord Noir region, so there’s an awful lot of good food to try out along the way… In between all these outings and activities, you'll be staying at a peaceful site with spacious and shaded pitches among mature trees. It's a simple site (please note there are no toilets or showers for guests) but a very chilled-out place where you can arrange outdoor massages, pick up local edible goodies from reception or take a table on the restaurant terrace for an easy meal or a drink in the open air. Montignac-Lascaux is well supplied with places to eat too, plus shops where you can pick up all the bits you’ll need for breakfasts, picnics and snacks.

Local attractions

If you only have time to visit one attraction while staying here, it surely has to be the Lascaux caves (five minutes’ drive). The artworks here are said to be around 20,000 years old, and while the originals are now hidden away from the public to preserve them you’ll get a very real sense of what they’re like at the Lascaux II replica cave and the Lascaux International Center of Parietal Art. Montignac-Lascaux is also a pretty place to wander around, with riverside paths, a historic bridge and a traditional market. To see some of the surroundings, you can hire canoes to paddle along the Vézère or join horse-riding excursions. If you like a bit more speed to your outings, have a go on the track at Garden Karting (40 minutes). Other good outings nearby include Château et jardins de Losse (10 minutes), Château de Commarque (25 minutes) and the caves around Les Eyzies (25 minutes), including the Abri de la Madeleine troglodyte village. Days spent exploring the medieval streets of Sarlat-la-Canéda (half an hour) and the art and heritage attractions (not to mention the food) of Périgueux (50 minutes) are good plans too.
