The castle and gardens

  • Peaceful campsite in the landscaped gardens of a Dordogne château
  • Périgueux half an hour’s drive and Sarlat-la-Canéda 50 minutes
  • Shaded pitches with a swimming pool; three-course meals available
Here’s a rare chance to camp up in the landscaped back garden of a two-hundred-year-old mansion… Château La Barge is a wonderfully romantic spot to linger, five minutes’ drive from the pretty village of Cubjac-Auvézère-Val d’Ans in the Dordogne countryside. This small and peaceful campsite has just a few pitches, all with electric hook-ups and all shaded by fruit and walnut trees, with modern amenities a short walk away up a flight of stone steps. There’s a swimming pool on site – great for cooling off on summer days – and you can also go wild swimming in the Auvézère River, just five minutes’ walk away. Deckchairs and tables are provided in the garden – pick up picnic ingredients from the shops in Rodas (five minutes’ drive). For those evenings when you don’t feel like cooking for yourselves, the site owners can organise a communal barbecue, or you can pre-order three-course fixed-price menus and eat alfresco under the covered pergola. All you need to do is turn up, enjoy a glass of wine and perhaps make new friends among your fellow campers as you dine.

Fully-serviced grass touring pitch

Liked: Fantastic site. No formal pitches, could just park wherever and not crowded at all. Lots of shade available. Gorgeous pool, really helpful owner who rushed to make sure the pool was tip top for us to get in (all to ourselves !). Lovely and quiet. Can order food for breakfast.

Disliked: Nothing ! though some people might not want to be so far from village facilities.

Liked: Friendly greeting. Large Pitch. Swimming pool, clean showers. Orders taken for croissants each day.

Disliked: The steps to the shower. Only because I had a recovering broken ankle.

Fully-serviced grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely little site, with good facilities, pool was closed for a few days, but soon as it was reopened it was delightful, clean. We attended and evening meal with fellow people on site, great to meet and experience the different people from different countries. 30 min drive to nearest shop/ bakery. Wi-Fi was only available when next to chateau. Electric supplied with long extension leads.

Disliked: Pitch up advertised site options as fully serviced pitches. This needs addressing as it should be grass and electric only.

Local attractions

Château La Barge is set in hilly Dordogne countryside, a mecca for hikers and mountain bikers – in fact the Grande Randonnée 646 route between Perigueux and Sainte-Foy-la-Grande goes right past the grounds. You can also paddle down the Auvézère by canoe from Cubjac-Auvézère-Val d’Ans (five minutes’ drive). For more cultural pursuits, you have a choice of gorgeous and photogenic Dordogne towns and villages. Start your exploration of the area at the striking Byzantine cathedral in Périgueux (half an hour), or visit the troglodyte caves and Benedictine abbey in Brantome (45 minutes). Historic Sarlat-la-Canéda (50 minutes) has plenty of gourmet restaurants in its labyrinthine medieval centre, and there are lively produce markets there on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Step back in time to visit the magical reinterpretation of prehistoric paintings at Lascaux IV - International Centre of Cave Art (half an hour), or go deep underground and take a boat ride on the subterranean lake at Le Gouffre (90 minutes) near Padirac.
