Tucked into centuries-old pine forest, Camp Borje is a laid-back, peaceful and family-friendly campsite backed by the slopes of Lička Plješivica and Mrsinj. Five minutes’ drive from the sleepy settlement of Korenica, it’s only 15 minutes by car from Entrance Two in Plitvice Lakes National Park, with its famed series of stepped waterfalls and lakes. Upon arrival, you’re free to pick your own partially or totally shaded pitch at this leafy 16-acre site with a soundtrack of chirping crickets and singing birds. Handy facilities include electric hook-ups and wifi, plus washrooms with showers and hot water. Younger kids can have a field day at the playground, try table tennis or bowling, and there are grass sports courts if you fancy a family game of volleyball or five-a-side football. Adjacent to the campsite is a self-service restaurant with a sun-trap terrace, a coffee bar for your morning caffeine fix and an essentials shop. As well as its proximity to Plitvice Lakes National Park, Camp Borje is a handy starting point for expeditions into the mountainous Lika-Senj region. Cycling and walking trails from the site will take you straight onto woodland trails.

Local attractions

The UNESCO-listed Plitvice Lakes National Park (15 minutes’ drive) is home to a series of 16 lakes connected by dramatic cascades. Explore Lake Kozjak by rowing boat or admire its turquoise waters from self-guided circular trails through the park, which also take in Lake Prošćansko and Veliki Slap, the highest waterfall with a drop of 230 feet. On your wanderings, keep a lookout for woodpeckers, owls and birds of prey. Don’t forget a jersey when you visit the Barać Caves (40 minutes), where the temperature is distinctly chilly. Take guided tours past stalactites and stalagmites in these subterranean caverns, thought to be the former home of Neanderthal humans, and where lions and bears roamed during the last Ice Age. Pay homage to one of the great scientists of the 20th century at the Nikola Tesla Memorial Centre in Smiljan (an hour), a complex that includes his childhood home, with interactive displays about his life, experiments and inventions.
