If you’re keen on adding to your green credentials on a Costa Rica camping break, perhaps it’s time to head for Seas the Day, a start-up farm campsite on the southern outskirts of Uvita in Puntarenas Province. Tucked into verdant rainforest just north of the Costanera Sur coastal highway, the pitches sit in a small valley, surrounded by 26 acres of hills and tropical forest bordered by a small and seasonal stream. Camping is on a level green field shaded by palms – the tent pitches underneath these trees are always the first to be bagged. Simple facilities include compost toilets and hot showers, with more development to come. There’s easy access to the Pacific Coast beach at Playa Colonia (10 minutes’ walk), and you can pick up local produce to barbecue from the supermarket in Uvita (25 minutes). If you fancy time off from cooking alfresco, there’s a sprinkling of laid-back pizzerias and burger bars in town too. Seas the Day is owned by conservationists eager to help the wildlife of Costa Rica, and a few camp rules apply to your stay: please be respectful of each other, don’t leave any rubbish, don’t make noise at night and don’t trample down animal paths. Finally, howler monkeys make an appearance on the site from time to time and there is copious wildlife in the rainforest, so please do not venture into the trees without protection.

Local attractions

A day on the beach is probably pretty high on your hit list – and luckily you have the choice of several in Parque Nacional Marino Ballena. Framed by rainforest, Playa Colonia (10 minutes’ walk) is a popular sunset-watching spot, and other local favourites include cliff-backed Playa Arco (35 minutes) and Playa Piñuela (five minutes’ drive) for safe swimming. You can look forward to crystal-clear water, pink or black sand, and – if you’re lucky – the sighting of turtles, whales or dolphins. When you want to stretch your legs, wait until low tide and stroll down to the ocean at Punta Uvita (50 minutes’ walk), a sand-and-rock outcrop that resembles a whale’s tail. To up the action a bit, go wild swimming in the nearest waterfall with natural pools (10 minutes’ drive), and white-water rafting or canyoning on the Savegre River (15 minutes). And if you hit Seas the Day in early March, you’ll coincide with the annual Envision Festival (10 minutes’ drive, a shuttle bus to the site is supplied), where you can watch fire eaters, join yoga sessions and participate in sunset ceremonies on the beach.
