- Peaceful site in the well-kept gardens of the San Jorge estate
- A five-minute drive from the centre of Villa de Leyva colonial town
- Wifi, restaurant, barbecues and firepits; board games for hire
Spend your sojourn in South America zipping from Zona de Camping San Jorge into one of Colombia’s most well-preserved colonial towns, Villa de Leyva, before reversing back to the site later for snoozes in the manicured gardens of the San Jorge estate (five minutes’ drive).
This friendly yet peaceful park in Boyacá has all the facilities needed for a smooth stay: think a restaurant, barbecue areas and a shop for figuring out eats. Covered dining areas are dotted about for meals under the cooling shade and plenty of grassy spots are around for picnics in the sunshine as well.
Wifi’s set up on site for browsing as you dine, and firepits are dotted about if you’re wanting extra light and a bit of added warmth while kicking off board game tournaments using the park’s selection.
Villa de Leyva’s also a swish spot to stroll towards in the evenings: head to the main square, Plaza Mayor De Villa De Leyva (a half an hour’s walk), to wander past whitewashed colonial buildings or take part in one of the regularly organised cultural festivals.
Back at the site, the well-kept bathrooms with hot water are built in a colonial-style structure with a fancy look and there’s ample parking for road-trippers.

Local attractions
Once you’ve got your bearings while wandering around the cobbled streets of Villa de Leyva (five minutes’ drive), grab a Colombian coffee from the main square before ambling along to attractions like the 17th-century Our Lady of the Rosary Church and Antonio Nariño House Museum, dedicated to the war hero (10 minutes).
On the outskirts of town, another home that draws in visitors is Casa Terracota (15 minutes), a cartoon-esque bright orange structure. Roam around the interior, giggling at the strange sculptures on display, then flit over to the El Fósil archaeological museum (15 minutes) to catch the kronosaurus fossil.
Dilly-dally with more dinosaurs at Gondava (20 minutes), a theme park filled with models of the extinct creatures, or swap ancient history for a hike to a lake 3,600 metres above sea level inside Iguaque National Park (the trail starts from a 20-minute drive away and access is between 8am and 9am).
Legs too tired just thinking about this expedition? Take yourself off to Boyacá’s capital of Tunja (an hour) to mingle with the students; for the ultimate Colombian city break, Bogotá’s varied museums, world-class graffiti murals and international restaurants are three hours away.
