- Spectacularly scenic site with views towards Iguaque National Park
- A 10-minute drive from Villa de Leyva, 25 minutes from winery tastings
- Half an hour’s drive from La Periquera Ecological Park
Fancy hols among the mountains and jungles of central Colombia? Sign up for oh so scenic stays at Hospedaje Camping La Tierrita, a family-friendly site less than 10 minutes’ drive from the Boyacán town of Villa de Leyva.
This is a top spot for all kinds of travellers, from active types to zen-hunting guests. The site’s 20 minutes from Iguaque National Park, so energy-expending walks, rambles into cloud forests and hikes to sacred lagoons are all within easy reach.
Those who prefer the simpler, quieter and slower things are well-served too… The site is particularly well placed for days spent doing nothing but zoning out in the sun, listening to the breeze in the trees and the birds overhead, and claiming a spot on the terrace to let eyes take every inch of the view over Zaquencipa valley towards Iguaque.
Common spaces for chatting, meditating and being around other guests are dotted around the site too, so whether solo contemplation or friendly mingling are the order of the day, all avenues are covered.

Local attractions
If Iguaque doesn’t offer up enough physical challenges to keep athletic guests busy, there are other options hereabouts. Parque Mayoral is a 20-minute drive from base, and has canopy trails and Tibetan bridges to conquer and rappelling and canyoning to get adrenaline spiking, while Aventura Park (35 minutes) has its fair share of Tibetan bridges along with bungee jumps and Tarzan swings.
Prefer a more sedate type of hol? Wander into Villa de Leyva to explore the town’s colonial streets, view the art collection at Museo del Carmen or learn about Colombia’s revolutionary history in the houses of Antonia Ricuarte and Antonio Nariño, and wind up days with a stop in one of the small breweries. (Wine drinkers are looked after too, as there are two vineyards offering tours within 25 minutes.)
Those who’d rather dive into the past than into the bottom of a glass (or those who are big fans of both) should enjoy digging into some of the area’s history… There’s a palaeontology museum about five minutes from base, a fossil museum 20 minutes away, and pre-Colombia Muisca civilisation sites Sol Muisca and El Infiernito are well worth visits within 20 minutes.
For days that are a little less typical, a pitstop for pics at Casa Terracota (a house believed to be the largest piece of pottery in the world), an afternoon of dino-splores at Gondava theme park and an unusual tasting at Granja de Avestruces ostrich farm are all within 25 minutes.
