  • Secluded site with great views, close to Tayrona National Park
  • A 45-minute drive from Santa Marta, Colombia's oldest city
  • Restaurant, shop, shared kitchen and guided tours available on site
In search of splendid views, Caribbean food and tropical vibes? If so, make your way to Camping La Cima, a secluded, rural site close to Colombia's north coast, where you can wake up to the sight of the cloud-covered rainforest of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Tayrona National Park, with its golden sands and coconut trees, is close by, as is Santa Marta, Colombia's oldest city (25 kilometres away). This nifty location is well placed for jaunts around the national park: keep your eyes peeled for wildlife as you wander between mountains and the sea. Given such special rainforest surrounds, naturally this site tries to be as eco-conscious as it can and keep its pitches as unobtrusive as possible, tucking them away among the trees (which also handily means a good bit of shade while you slumber). With a focus on outdoor living, facilities are on the low-key side too, stretching just to a shared kitchen and a bathroom block with toilets and showers. The main building is all set up to help guests get a real taste of Tayrona culture – it’s got an art gallery with a small shop, and a restaurant for sampling local grub. A little forward planning is required when it comes to getting here: you’ll be OK if you're in a four-wheel drive, but others will have to set out from Calabazo (three kilometres away, the closest bus stop). From here, you can walk along a trail to reach the site, or ride up by motorbike or on horseback if you're feeling adventurous.

Local attractions

To see how people lived around here parts in pre-Columbian days, ask at the site for a guided tour of the nearby town of Taycu, home to local indigenous folk. Camping La Cima also arranges beach tours, taking in Tayrona hotspots such as Playa Brava, Cabo San Juan, Piscina and Arrecife. The major city of Santa Marta is 45 minutes away by road and is home to some of Colombia's best urban beaches. Spanish conquistadors were drawn to these parts by legends of El Dorado; appropriately enough, the local Gold Museum gives visitors insights into the many uses of this precious metal. If you've come to the Colombian jungle, chances are you're up for an adventure? If you've got time to spare, make the multi-day trek from Santa Marta to Ciudad Perdida, a lost city in the rainforest that's more ancient than Machu Picchu. For a day trip that's equally big on thrills, head to Taganga (50 minutes) to go scuba diving off the Caribbean coast.
