  • Laidback park with views of the stunning Serra da Moeda mountain range
  • A 20-minute drive from the huge open-air Inhotim art museum
  • Swimming pool and sauna on site, plus a gliding ramp and paraglider
Art fan? Or more into nature? Either way, Aqui no Sítio Camping e Hostel, in south-eastern Brazil’s state of Minas Gerais, should see you sorted. This park is 20 minutes’ drive from the open-air Inhotim Museum of contemporary art, set in the midst of a massive 500,000 acres of botanical gardens. As extraordinary as that attraction is, it’s not just about gandering at this celebrated outdoor gallery on a stay here, as the region also has waterfalls to wander towards, wildlife-rich hiking trails and historic churches to poke around. Shops and restaurants are in the town of Palhano, less than five minutes' drive away, and fishing at the Represa Lagoa Grande lake is half an hour’s drive. When you’re back at the site, you won’t be far from all the lush greenery – Aqui no Sítio Camping e Hostel has views of the Serra da Moeda mountain range everywhere you turn. Unwind in the peaceful setting, mixing up time spent admiring views with dips in the swimming pool and sessions in the sauna, then tuck into some Brazilian grub grilled on your barbecue or campfire. For a particularly memorable activity to try out, this site also has its own gliding ramp and paraglider. And if you're after ways to pass the time that won't make your heart rate spike so alarmingly? Check out the evening entertainment and the games room.

Local attractions

A trip to Inhotim Museum, one of the country’s biggest centres of contemporary art is, of course, a must when you’re in the state of Minas Gerais. Just make sure to have a comfy pair of shoes to hand – there’s a lot of walking to do around the sculptures, art pavilions and 4,000 or so plant species at this sprawling complex. You could also jump in a chauffeured golf cart (for a fee) to cover more ground when seeking out memorable sights such as the maze of mirrors hidden among the trees. If you’d rather just be in nature with no distractions from the likes of international artists such as Olafur Eliasson and Anish Kapoor, make tracks towards Cachoeira das Codornas (45 minutes’ drive) and rinse yourself under the waterfall, or take on the trails of Serra do Rola-Moça State Park (35 minutes), cutting through savannah lands and the Atlantic Forest. For a complete change of pace, Belo Horizonte (an hour’s drive) is the sixth-biggest city in Brazil and the capital of Minas Gerais. Head here for tours of the Mineirão Stadium’s Brazilian Football Museum, wanders around pretty Lake Pampulha and to gaze at the wavy-roofed Church of St Francis, dreamed up by homegrown modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer.
