  • Family-run park on the banks of an award-winning lake
  • Surrounded by 100 kilometres of walking and cycling trails
  • Guided hikes and swimming, fishing, boating and rafting all available
Get active in Austria – on and off site – at Camping am Badesee in the state of Styria. This peaceful and family-run place in a green countryside setting is on the shores of an award-winning seven-hectare bathing and fishing lake in Mühlen, on the sunny side of Styria's Seetal Alps. Spectacular scenery made up of the mountain ranges, springs, alpine meadows and fragrant pine forests of Nockberge National Park surround the site, along with a network of 100 kilometres' worth of well-marked cycling and hiking trails with views over the swathe of mountain peaks stretching from Slovenia to Upper Austria. You could also arrange a horsey canter from Aich, four kilometres away, hike the canyon and waterfalls of Graggerschlucht, eight kilometres away, or take to the slopes for skiing at Grebenzen, 21 kilometres from the site. But do leave a lot of time for hanging around on your Austrian base too… where there's loads to do for all ages from watery activities like swimming, fishing and boating, to land-based options including bouncing around the adventure playground and trampoline. Or you might also fancy a go at Nordic walking, mountain biking, mushroom picking, guided hikes, table tennis or volleyball… or hiring a bike from the team to take off into the countryside… The Badesee team has also added an on-site herb garden that guests can snip from to sprinkle on meals, and a restaurant if you're a firm believer in someone else sorting the cooking while you're on hol: fresh breakfast pastries, pizzas, barbecues, desserts, homemade juices and local specialities are all dished up on the sun terrace.

Local attractions

Early holiday days at this splendidly-set site should include dips and fishing in the river along with hiking and biking nearby; when you're ready to venture further, a good variety of attractions and activities is within driving distance. Staying active, recommended local days include getting along to nearby Tonnerhütte (seven kilometres), the starting point of the Zirbitzkogel hike that clambers to an altitude of just under 4,000 metres to the highest point of the Lavanttal Alps. (Faint not: although high up, it's an easy wander and is well marked along the way.) Aficionados of Austrian summits have several more to pick from in the local area, such as Zirbitzkogel (12 kilometres), Kreuzeck (16 kilometres), Kalkberg (17 kilometres), Grebenzen (21 kilometres) and Kuhalm (34 kilometres). Or have a day at the Sankt Veit an der Glan town of Friesach (21 kilometres), 861 metres above sea level and the oldest recorded town in Carinthia. For more placid pastimes, the ruins and legends of Steinschloss can be found within 17 kilometres; even more peacefully, wellness resorts are in Gesundheitstherme Wildbad, 11 kilometres away, and St. Lambrecht's Abbey, within 21.
