  • Eco-friendly family camping in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
  • Tenby half an hour’s drive; Manor Wildlife Park 25 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path; firepits available
If you’re after a camping break in south-west Wales with a sustainable vibe and welcoming to offspring and pets, you’ve found it at Grass Roots Caravan and Glamping, where the owners are working towards becoming carbon neutral. Set in 4.5 acres of peaceful Pembrokeshire countryside 10 minutes’ drive from Milford Haven, the site is right on the long-distance Pembrokeshire Coast Path – just the job for safe wanderings with the kids and dogs. As camping wouldn’t be camping without a campfire to cosy up around, firepits are available – you can pre-order a bag of sustainable firewood for your arrival or bring your own from home. Pick up barbecue supplies from the supermarkets in Pembroke (15 minutes), and if you’re not an advocate of open-air cooking, there are several pubs and fish and chip shops within 10 minutes’ drive. Handy facilities include a modern toilet and shower block with separate amenities for men and women, a utility room for keeping all utensils spike and span, and a washing machine for ensuring that the family look respectable (there’s a small charge per load).

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Excellent site with friendly and helpful staff. Great location to the area. Clean tidy and flat. The ferry inn at the waters edge is fabulous with great food and friendly staff.

Disliked: Possibly could do with more showers when the site has a few there. But always clean and tidy.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Great communication from site, good sized pitch. Friendly owners alpacas on site

Disliked: The site was very busy . Only 2 toilets and 1 shower in each of men and women. No mirror in toilet block and 1 sink. There was 1 particular man who was quite loud and swore alot. We went to visit family on our 2nd day and spent the night there and didn't return to the site.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Very clean tidy site, toilets clean and smart shower suppled hot water😁. I received a text message explaining where my pitch was and facilities. And to knock door or phone if any problems or questions, which made me feel no pressure. Loved that they put on an open fire in the communal area and on the Saturday night they had a band playing Everyone came together. They even offered to pick bits up from shop for us everyone we met from staff to visitors were very friendly. Nice little walk to stretch the dogs legs. Good access onto site, located in a great area to get to so many different places. Not far from local immunities. We will definitely come back!!!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We have just had 4 days camping at Grass roots and had a wonderful time. There were 14 of us In total and 3 dogs. The site is clean and tidy. And well organised. We loved the toilet wallpaper ! The owners are the nicest people and nothing is too much for them. They live on site and are always available. It is quiet and relaxing and just generally lovely. We went on a lovely walk down to the The Ferry House Inn which was suggested to us by the owners. It's really lovely and definitely worth a visit. Thank you Chloe, Neal and Stacey for a wonderful stay we will definitely be back x

Local attractions

Whether you all love llamas or have a passion for tigers, Manor Wildlife Park (25 minutes) has got you covered. Let animal-mad kids be keepers for the day at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (half an hour) – and let toddlers loose in the play barn. If it’s beaches the family is longing for, favourite sandy expanses in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park include Marloes Sands and Freshwater (both half an hour). You can also explore local islands on boat trips: departing from Martin’s Haven (half an hour), Skomer Island is home to hundreds of puffins, Manx Shearwater and seals. If you’d like to up the adrenaline levels a tad further, the national park also provides a spectacular backdrop for coasteering, a heady mix of scrambling, swimming and jumping along the base of the sea cliffs – keep an eye out for whales and dolphins as you go. Firmly back on dry land, have a wander around the streets of pretty Tenby (half an hour), lined with pastel-coloured houses, galleries and indie shops. Check out the exhibitions at mighty medieval Pembroke Castle (15 minutes), standing proud over its namesake river, or visit St Davids Cathedral (45 minutes), tucked away in the UK’s smallest city.
