Overlooking the sea

  • Family-run site situated on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Direct access to Porthsele beach; a mile from Whitesands
  • Farm shop, coffee hut, bar and pizzas available in high season
Fancy a stay on a family-run farm… with direct access to a beach below? Make your way to Pencarnan Farm Caravan and Camping Site, a 96-acre farm overlooking Porthsele beach on the Pembrokeshire coast. The site is on the most western tip of Pembrokeshire, with views of St Georges Channel connecting the Irish and Celtic seas. You'll be in good company with a stay here: generations of the same family have been running the site since the mid-1950s, a holiday spot for guests who return year after year – some with their kids and grandkids now in tow. This place is just the ticket for outdoor adventures too, as it's set directly above Porthsele beach (with private vehicle access so you can cart all your kit along with you). The sea and bay are safe for swimming and kayaking, and there are plenty of rockpools to explore at low tide. If you haven’t got your fill of sea breeze, surfing beach Whitesands is a one-mile walk along the coastal path or, if you’re feeling adventurous, a half-mile swim or kayak from Porthsele. Sorting supplies is easy at the farm too: in the high season, a site shop is on hand with camping and food supplies, wetsuits and logs for beach fires, and a coffee hut opens every day. A bar and pizzas are also available at peak times.

Rhosson Field non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very friendly and easy going campsite accompanied by the best views! The bathrooms and the showers were very clean. A path leading right down to a small beach with mini coves in you can go inside. That same path also leads to a lovely walk on the coast where we watched the sunset. Easily one of our favourite spots we've been in our camper!

Beach Field non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: It’s 20 years since we’ve stayed here and it’s as good as it was back then, not quite sure why it has taken us so long to go back. Anyway, it was mid October and a chilly but sunny weekend - we were the only van on site on Friday and only 3 on Saturday, where was everyone? It’s fantastic. Clean toilet block, warm showers etc. But best part was the proximity to the beach where we swam and surfed.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike, but I guess if you like more interaction it’s worth noting that it was a self check-in situation and the shop was closed since it’s the off-season. We knew this in advance so it didn’t bother us.

16-amp Ramsey Island Field electric grass touring pitch

Liked: We liked the proximity to the costal path and lovely beaches. We were there very late in the season, the touring pitches were very quiet and we had a huge field to ourselves! The showers were nice and hot. There was an uncut area left o nature in the middle of our field.

3-amp Carn Llidi View electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The view was stunning. There was plenty of space, maybe due to us only being one of 2 on the tent pitches. Be prepared for only a low amp outlet, normal 13a plug required, set in a waterproof enclosure.

Disliked: At the lower tent pitches, there is quite a walk back up the hill to the toilet/showers. I think that when it’s height of season, there maybe quite a queue for the facilities, as they are not in great numbers.

Local attractions

This is heaven for beach buffs: Porthsele and Whitesands beaches are both within walking distance of Pencarnan. At Porthsele, take your pick from kayaking, surfing and paddleboarding from its sandy shore; if fishing's more your bag you can fish for mackerel, pollock and seabass from the beach and from certain points on the cliff around Pencarnan's land. There are also a few marked climbing spots around the cliffs on the land and some good entry points for coasteering or a coastal swim back to Porthsele beach… followed back at base with a sunset beach fire or barbecue to end the day. The famed surfing centre of Whitesands, a mile away on the coast path from Pencarnan, has a café, deckchairs and wetsuit hire, plus lifeguards in the summer months. Heading south, St Justinian’s (under a mile away along the coast path) is home to RNLI St Davids Lifeboat Station and a departure point for boat trips around, onto and beyond Ramsey Island to spy seals, seabirds, porpoises, whales, dolphins and sharks. Make time too for a trip to the tiny city of St Davids, to browse its shops and galleries and take a look at sixth-century St Davids Cathedral.
