  • Woodland pitches a five-minute drive from the Pembrokeshire coast
  • Abermawr Bay 10 minutes’ drive; St Davids Cathedral 25 minutes
  • Private hot-water shower and covered campfire area; washing-up area
Can’t decide between a seaside holiday and hiking in the Welsh hills? No need to agonise at Kitewood Camping, which is set in 60 acres of gorgeous woodland a five-minute drive from the coastal town of Fishguard, right on the edge of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Shaded by tall trees, the large pitches feel completely private. What’s more, you won’t have to queue at the toilet block, since each pitch comes with its own compost toilet and shower (with unlimited hot water – bliss). And if that’s still not enough to persuade you, how about your own covered campfire area complete with firepit (and free firewood), grill and picnic table? That ought to seal the deal, right? Kitewood is not all about woodland solitude, though. If you feel like making new friends, there is a communal area with games (and USB charging points, if you are desperate to check your Twitter feed), as well as a washing-up area set in a timber-frame structure in the woods. How will you spend your time here? Climb up Dinas Mountain (15 minutes’ drive) for expansive views of the north Pembrokeshire coastline, or join the Pembrokeshire Coast Path at Abermawr (10 minutes) for dramatic clifftop walks. Kitewood’s owners will be happy to recommend the most suitable section of this long-distance path for your fitness level. Then there’s the beaches, of course, whether you’re into surfing and swimming (Barafundle Bay, one hour), fishing (Abermawr Bay, 10 minutes) or spotting seals (Abercastle Beach, 15 minutes).

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: A lovely remote secluded campsite, the pitches are excellently spaced, individual, self contained and quiet. You don’t feel overlooked and could just be you in a forest. Your personal facilities are excellent, compost toilet and shower are great. The toilet doesn’t smell. The shower is hot. The covered area has a fire pit and a pub garden bench. There is plentiful free fire wood. There is a communal area for washing up and another for socialising. There is a pizza oven and fire pit here too. There is a large carpark at end of long driveway from main road. Cars stay parked here. But you can drive car to pitch site to unpack and pack up. I stayed for a week. There’s loads to do locally and further away. Fishguard is a five minute drive, with a large CoOp, the town doesn’t have a wide choice of restaurants, but it’s small town. The campsite is very much as described by the website. It’s a lovely place to stay.

Disliked: The pitch site ground was very very wet. I had small tent so was able to find dry hard area. This could be problematic if you had big tent or tents. Maybe some drainage work required. The “grill” was bent by heat, not really usable, needs replacing or removing. The covered area tarp, is showing signs of wear and tear, with a few holes, which allows water through, not major problem, but be aware. The communal area, was great, but I guess the community didn’t treat with respect, as parents allowed children to leave it scattered with the games equipment provided and crush all the table tennis balls. Which meant there were no balls to play. This is on guests rather than owners. But it did feel a little unloved, and maybe added to disrespect from guests. The rubbish bin in the carpark was overflowing, needed emptying.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Excellent campsite and layout. Camped here by chance and weather forecast changed and wanted some shelter. Tucked away in the woods, each pitch has plenty of room and includes: - Shelter - Benches - Hot Shower - Toilet There's a bug pile of wood and wheelbarrows to help yourself too for fire and it's only 20 mins walk into Fishguard. Highly recommended and started an appreciation for Forest Camping

Local attractions

The surrounding area is dotted with constructions dating back to ancient times, including the Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber (25 minutes), with several massive stones sourced from the nearby Preseli Hills. The Gors Fawr Stone Circle (half an hour) dates from the second or third century BC, while three stone cairns mark the top of the Iron Age Foel Drygarn Hill Fort (35 minutes). Originally built in the 12th century, St Davids Cathedral (25 minutes) was later much altered and added to, which results in its intriguing blend of Romanesque and English Gothic architectural elements. Just across the River Alun are the medieval ruins of St Davids Bishop’s Palace. In addition to farm animals (from lambs to shire horses), Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (40 minutes) is home to lions, giraffes and other African mammals. There’s also a Ferris wheel, plus a selection of vintage-style rides, from waltzers to dodgems, in an indoor enclosure, so the rain doesn’t have to stop the good times.
