Safari lodges in the wild fields of an organic farm

Set down in the wild fields alongside an organic farm in West Wales… well, not directly in the wild fields, but rather in one of Golden Grove Retreat’s safari tents, which are part of the aforementioned wildlife haven. This retreat is designed for all those who want to recharge in a splendid natural spot just 10 minutes’ drive away from the outskirts of the Brecon Beacons National Park and historic sites like Paxton's Tower and Dryslwyn Castle. This isn’t back to basics camping in the slightest, however, unless you want to count evenings by a firepit with kindling and wood provided from the site (and coal available to purchase for a small price per bag when arranged in advance). The tents are each equipped with a kitchen, a living room, a dining area and two bedrooms. You should be able to stay toasty at all times, with a woodburning stove in the tent and shared access to a woodfired sauna and plunge pool. Your tent also has its own outdoor gas-fired shower, which comes as a pair with a composting toilet. The owner is a yoga teacher, aromatherapist and reflexologist, so you'll be able to book a massage in advance or ask for a session when they’re around on site. A massage might be just what you need after all the outdoor activities that are available around the Carmarthenshire countryside and coastline, like kayaking, fishing, caving, coasteering, surfing and rock climbing. With all those active outdoor pursuits must come some filling food. Llanarthney (10 minutes’ drive) and Capel Dewi (15 minutes) both have lovely little spots for local produce, and Llandeilo (10 minutes) has several nice places to eat too. And in Carmarthen (25 minutes), it’s easy-peasy to track down brunches and lunches, fish and chips or tapas and cocktails.

Local attractions

Castles or gardens? Waterfalls or mountains? These are likely to be your biggest (welcome) dilemmas at Golden Grove Retreat. Start by ticking off famed Welsh castles like Dinefwr (20 minutes' drive), Carreg Cennen (20 minutes) and Llansteffan (40 minutes), before moving onto gorgeous gardens – Aberglasney Gardens (10 minutes) and the National Botanic Garden of Wales (15 minutes) are the standouts. What about those hikes too? Henrhyd Falls (50 minutes) has a spectacular trek in store, and of course Pen y Fan (an hour and 10 minutes) and the Gower’s Three Cliffs Bay (an hour) are bucket-list hikes too. There are handfuls of beaches within an hour and half’s drive of the site, including Pembrey beach (50 minutes). As for bike rides, head for downhill trails in Brechfa Forest (half an hour) or the gentler Millennium Coastal Path (40 minutes).
