Dryw Bach Glamping: Croeso!

General

  • Cosy hand-built hut at a small farm 10 minutes' drive from Llandeilo
  • National Botanic Garden and Carreg Cennen Castle within 20 minutes
  • Ensuite shower room, woodburner, kitchen and decking

A cosy (and cleverly hand-built) hut in the Carmarthenshire countryside is what’s on offer at Dryw Bach Glamping, on the edge of a small farm 10 minutes’ drive from Llandeilo.

There’s just the one wooden hut here, so you’ll have plenty of space to switch off, breathe the fresh air and enjoy the sights of the surrounding private wildlife garden. The hut’s deck has seating and a table – just the spot for early birds to sit and watch the sunrise over the fields, or for night owls to look up into the night sky (this is a dark-sky area, so you should get some good starry displays if the clouds allow).

Inside, the hut’s been kitted out with a cosy double bed, a sofa, a woodburning stove and a little kitchen with a gas hob, kettle (for those early-morning cuppas) and fridge (to keep the evening drinks cool). There’s an ensuite bathroom with shower and eco toilet, and you’ll have bedding and towels provided so you can afford to travel light. Pick up whatever supplies you need in Llandeilo – it’s got a couple of small supermarkets and some good little foodie shops (and also some great places to eat out if you prefer).

There’s some splendid countryside around here so it stands to reason that you may like to get out for a walk or bike ride – perhaps along the banks of the River Towy, in the western stretches of the Brecon Beacons National Park or in the grounds of one of the local castles (of which there are several, this being Wales…)

Wow, what an amazing little place to stay!

A week prior, we received an email with a little information document attached, which was good as it gave an idea of what was there and what we could need to take.

It was such a cosy little cabin to stay in but had exactly what we wanted. The little touches on arrival, such as the flowers and fresh eggs were lovely.

We booked this because was wanted to get away for a few nights, away from everyone and thing. The cabin is in the middle of nowhere, so no being disturbed. No phone signal was a bonus for us, so that we weren't bothered by work calls!
That said, it was only 10 minutes from the nearest town, which had the necessary shops for food etc. The Brecon Beacons are nearby and made for a lovely day out.

The kitchen was fairly well stocked with cutlery, crockery etc. Definitely handy to have a fridge. Gas hob was easy to use and made it easy to do breakfast. In fact that only thing that we wanted but did not have was a toaster (but that may well just be us and not something that everyone wants).

When we did not want to go out exploring, we sat on the balcony and read books, all the while watching the phenomenal number of birds that were attracted to the wildlife garden and pond (including a woodpecker, which neither of us had seen before).

The log burner was a nice addition, although we did not use it (we did consider using it one evening, but we had no idea how to use a log burner so decided it was safest to not use it - perhaps instructions could be left in the cabin about this, or they could be added to the information that was emailed out?)

Contactless check-in/out was good (a much as we would have liked to have said hi to the owners) and meant that we could arrive/leave at the time that suited us.

We would not hesitate to return here and are already looking at out calendars to book again!

    Disliked:

The jury is out on the eco-toilet. Whilst the idea and environmental motivation are excellent, we are not sure just how practical it is, and found that is started to smell a little after a day or so. It was serviceable but not what we had expected at all.
That said, no other complaints whatsoever.

From the manager...

Hey! Thank you so much for your feedback. We love hearing it all, it helps us learn and grow and make better experiences for our guests. Cabin now has a toaster!
Toilet has always been a bit of a conundrum. We went with what was most workable for the location and environment. It's not ideal for all of our guests and we appreciate the ones who give it a go!
Thanks again :)

The hut was super clean when we arrived, in a spot away from the main house with its own wild garden and pond. It was in a peaceful area so no other people just the sound of nature and farm animals which is just what we wanted. A 15 minute walk to the pub which serves beautiful food.

Absolutely every aspect of this is stunning...loads of nearby things to do..a glass of wine by the log burner in the evening.

Loved our stay and will definitely be back... everything you need and more.

A great escape to a peaceful place was just what we needed.

And the black cat we nicknamed "nipper" is gorgeous

    Thanks for an excellent holiday

Upon arrival, there was a contactless check in, but Donna made sure we were comfortable and to ask if we needed anything. The cabin was everything and more, decorated with little birds and very cosy - it had everything you would need for your stay and more (fresh eggs and milk!). The constant stream of birds outside the door was amazing to sit and watch from your bed. Also, the farmyard symphony of cows, sheep and cockerels was comforting alongside the countryside silence.

Local attractions

Now, you can’t possibly have a break in Wales without visiting a castle, can you? Take your pick from Dinefwr, Dryslwyn and Carreg Cennen: all three are within a 20-minute drive, and all three have great views and some fine grounds to take a walk around. None of them is habitable these days though, so for something a bit smarter, sign up for a house tour at Gelli Aur (20 minutes, open on selected days only; book ahead) or just take a walk around its arboretum.

If you’re into green-fingered pursuits, you’ll definitely want to stop by at gorgeous Aberglasney Gardens (15 minutes’ drive), set around a restored medieval building, and the National Botanic Garden of Wales (25 minutes), home to a much more contemporary huge glasshouse designed by Norman Foster.

Other destinations you might like to put on your day-trip list include the Dolaucothi Gold Mines (20 minutes), the Dylan Thomas Boathouse in Laugharne (45 minutes) and the sweeping sandy beach at Pembrey Country Park (50 minutes).
