  • Carmarthenshire wild camping with spectacular Black Mountains views
  • A 10-minute drive to National Botanic Garden; 20 to Carmarthen Castle
  • Pitch in meadows or woods, fresh eggs for sale; pubs 15 minutes’ drive
With fabulous views of the Black Mountains, Pentre Dolau Escapes is a wild camping spot right in Carmarthenshire countryside. It’s in 20 private acres, and you have the choice of setting up pitch in fields, a wildflower meadow or woodlands. There’s plenty of space for you to set up your tent, and once you’ve settled in, take time to explore your surroundings, have picnics or perhaps walk your canine pals. You’re safe to let the kids run around too – and there are tree swings for them to play on hidden about the place. This being wild camping, facilities are pretty minimal, covering a shower and loo, and ice-pack freezing to keep your supplies fresh. It’s an idea to pack a torch, as there is no lighting on site, but at least you can park by your pitch so there’s no need to lug heavy gear across fields. The owners can supply logs for your campfire as well as freshly laid eggs for cooked breakfasts (both extra cost). Should you need to replenish stocks for the barbecue, fill up on essentials at the supermarkets in Cross Hands (15 minutes’ drive). Several takeaways and pubs offer an alternative for those days when you don’t feel like cooking. For a change of pace from scenic on-site strolls to sightseeing days out, Carmarthen (20 minutes) has bags to offer, including a castle, theatre and markets, while Llanelli (25 minutes) has a long stretch of dog-friendly sand.

Local attractions

For a top-notch day out locally, the National Botanic Garden of Wales will have you wandering landscaped parkland, checking out rare plants in the tropical glasshouses and watching raptors flying at The British Bird of Prey Centre (both 10 minutes’ drive) – there’s a dual ticket for both venues. To blow the cobwebs away, head for bracing headland walks along the clifftop path in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (half an hour), or try a spot of high-octane coasteering off the Tenby (50 minutes) shores. For less adventurous souls, WWT Llanelli Wetland Centre (35 minutes) is a birdwatching hotspot for flamingos and kingfishers. And of course, you’re never far from a family- (and dog-) friendly beach at Burry Port and Llanelli (both 25 minutes). You can mix things up with a bit of culture too. Sitting on its rocky promontory medieval Carmarthen Castle (20 minutes) has interactive trails to follow, while Parc Howard Museum (25 minutes) offers a gorgeous Italianate mansion to nose around as well as a wonderful collection of Llanelli pottery.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Lovely peaceful campsite! We carried on up the track and pitched up in a shady spot in the woods. The kids loved the rope swings, treehouse and climbing frames. Fabulous warm showers and clean compost loos. Very peaceful place with easy access to Kidwelly Castle and the most enormous, empty, sandy beach at Pembrey Coubtry Park.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: If you love quiet, back to basic camping then we would 100% recommend this site. Friendly, welcoming hosts. We pitched up in the woods and was out the way of everything. Showers were hot, toilets were basic. Campfires allowed and collected our own fire wood. Fantastic views and lovely walks. Within driving distance of some amazing places and beaches. We will definitely be returning.

Disliked: Not really a dislike but showers didnt really have much light unless someone stood and held main door open so would recommend talking a floor standing torch with you.
