  • Peaceful grass pitches overlooking the Towy Valley near Llanarthney
  • National Botanic Garden of Wales 10 minutes' drive away
  • Pick your own pitch at a simple site with well-designed facilities
You can pick your own pitch when you arrive at Gwynon Camping – but frankly they’re all pretty much as good as each other at this Carmarthenshire site in a quiet spot overlooking the Towy Valley. Guest numbers are kept on the low side at this site to ensure there’s plenty of space for everyone to spread out and relax within the allocated grass field. This is a farming area with lots of animals nearby, so any dogs you bring along will need to be kept on a lead while on site; the farmyard is close to the pitching area if you’d like to buy some free-range eggs for your breakfast. It’s a fairly simple setup here, in keeping with the thoroughly rural surroundings, but the facilities have been well thought out – guests have access to mains water, a compost toilet (cleaned daily and provided with a supply of lavender petals to scatter) and a hot-water shower (in a little hut with hooks for your clothes and space to change). This may be a true countryside setting but it’s one that’s very well connected, with several local attractions within 10 minutes’ drive (including the National Botanic Garden of Wales and British Bird of Prey Centre), and the A48 not far off for those looking to explore further. If you’d like to stay closer to base, you may wish to take a walk to Paxton’s Tower, a National Trust-owned 200-year-old folly up on a hill. Campfires and barbecues are both permitted here so you might like to stop for supplies in local towns like Carmarthen or Llandeilo (both within 20 minutes’ drive); Llanarthney (five minutes) also has a lovely pub, a deli and a fresh milk vending machine.
